The archived warnings, watches and discussions in force at that minute are drawn over the scan, this one among them.

Did it verify

Not verified. The Iowa Environmental Mesonet's Cow found no qualifying storm report inside this severe thunderstorm warning while it was in force. That is not proof nothing happened: reports are thin where few people live.

Cow counts a report within 15 km of the polygon while the warning was in force: a tornado for a tornado warning; hail of 1 inch or more, a gust of 58 mph or more or wind damage for a severe thunderstorm warning; a flash flood report for a flash flood warning.

What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this severe thunderstorm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Greenville-Spartanburg, SC wrote its last area forecast discussion before this severe thunderstorm warning went out at Jul 6, 7:48 PM EDT, 38 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 6, 7:48 PM EDT, 38 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
748 PM EDT WED JUL 6 2016

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper disturbance will make its way across the area today. A warm
and unstable airmass should persist across the region for the
remainder of the work week as a cold front approaches the area on
Saturday. This front should stall out somewhere near the area toward
the end of the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 730 PM Wednesday: Convection over E TN has pulsed into the NC
mountains and as of AFD time just issued SVR for Buncombe/Henderson
which are right along the sbCAPE gradient. CAMs not handling this
convection well at all but have made some pencil edits to pop grids
to try to outline this thinking with additional convection bubbling
up over the mountains through the evening and transitioning into the
morning when next shortwave comes through. Will monitor trends to
see if this makes it farther SE toward the Piedmont but in the
meantime have significantly reduced pops across the Piedmont areas.
Temps are a mess with rain-cooled air but should catch up to current
overnight lows.

Otherwise, will have to keep an eye to the west throughout the
evening, as an MCS is organizing in association with a short wave
trough across the mid-Miss Valley. Westerly shear could bring this
activity toward the forecast area by daybreak Thursday, especially
in light of the fact that the models generally agree in bringing the
mid-level short wave into western NC between 12Z-15Z. This makes for
another problematic convection forecast for tomorrow afternoon, as
the wave may be pushing to our east during peak heating, and the
atmosphere may be somewhat stabilized by morning convection. Will
essentially feature another round of 40-50 pops across the area from
late morning on.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Wednesday: The short term fcst period initializes
on Thursday evening amidst a fairly zonal flow regime aloft with a
series of embedded shortwaves as well as a deepening trof axis
sliding southeast across the upper Midwest states, while a broad
elongated subtropical ridge attempts to retrograde westward. At the
surface, high pressure beneath said H5 ridge looks to be in control
across the southeast states as surface cyclogenesis and thus a cold
front move beneath the a fore mentioned Midwest H5 trof. An initial
vortmax is progged to slide atop the southern Appalachians on
Thursday, with remnant convection likely ongoing across the NC high
terrain, possibly breaking containment across the NC/SC piedmont by
the time this fcst initializes. Said convection looks to weaken
with heating loss throughout the late evening hours leading to
drying overnight conditions.

Pattern evolution into/through Friday favors abundant deep layer
subsidence as upper heights build atop the surface anticyclone.
With that, temperatures are expected to surge into the upper 90s,
possibly exceeding the century mark along and south of the I85
corridor, which combined with dewpoints in the mid/upper 60s will
present the possibility for excessive heat indices. Despite the
amount of heating, it looks as if any llv capping will be to strong
to overcome without any significant triggering mechanisms, aside for
across the high terrain where upsloping could aid said cap erosion.
Any storms that do develop could be strong given abundant cape and
weak yet improving shear. Meanwhile, the upper trof and associated
surface features will have advected further downstream, with the
leading of two fronts approaching the TN valley late on Friday into
Saturday as the primary upper low moves across the central Great
Lakes. Guidance does favor convection moving along the front
however seems to also suggest a weakening trend as it moves east
encountering the deeper subsidence.

On Saturday the frontal axis is progged to stall/washout in an east
to west orientation across TN/KY. Meanwhile, another potent/compact
H5 wave looks to eject eastward out of the mid MS river valley into
the lower OH/TN valleys with weak sfc wave development probable
along said frontal axis. Guidance favors showers and thunderstorms
out ahead of the primary upper wave, however looks to keep any
activity to the west through the afternoon hours before convection
finally spreads across portions of northeast GA and southwest NC
near the end of the period. Given little change in the pattern,
temperatures looks to be excessive yet again on Saturday.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 230 PM EDT Wednesday: The medium range period kicks off on
Saturday evening as an upper trof moves eastward across the eastern
Great Lakes toward New England, while a shortwave impulse moves out
of the Ozarks into the Midsouth region and a ridge amplifies over
the central/southern Plains states. At the surface, a weak
trof/front will enter the Appalachians region with high pressure
prevailing out ahead across northeast GA and the western Carolinas.
The front is progged to move atop/through the fcst area overnight
likely with little fanfare. Moving along, high pressure behind the
departing upper trof looks to move across the OH valley through
Sunday into Monday with guidance favoring intrusion of a back door
front in lee of the southern Appalachians. This fropa could provide
some relief from the heat, as well as drought conditions due to
increased shower and thunderstorm chances Sunday and Monday as the
front looks to stall out in the vicinity. Meanwhile the above
mentioned Midsouth wave looks to become cutoff from the mean flow,
slowly working its was eastward across KY/TN, possibly adding
additional support for more widespread showers and thunderstorms as
moisture is lifted atop the stalled frontal axis. All that said,
confidence remains low at this range given the approaching amplified
ridge pattern advecting eastward through midweek. Temperatures
through the medium range are fcst to be a bit cooler, generally
around or just above normal levels.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT: VFR through the period with SW winds between 4-8kt this
evening and overnight. Delayed PROB30 TSRA for Thursday until 18z,
though with VCSH by 16z, but kept similar overall trends as previous
TAF in line with timing for upper disturbance moving through.
Introduced gusty SW winds by 18z as well and kept them through the
end of the period. Will have to refine PROB30/TEMPO TSRA vs. VCTS or
prevailing TSRA with updated forecasts.

Elsewhere: Also VFR through the period, with the exception of TAF-
time TSRA at KAVL where SVR TSRA is passing through. Kept VCTS at
KAVL through 03z and will reevaluate through the evening. For
KAVL/KHKY, have long period of PROB30 starting in the predawn hours
and lasting through the day. Will need to refine this timing with
later issuances. Delayed PROB30 at Upstate TAFs until 16z and
carried through the end of the period. KAVL should see more up-
valley winds, though other TAFs will see SW winds picking up
Thursday, especially at Upstate sites where, like KCLT, low-end
gusts are expected.

Outlook: A mainly diurnal pattern of showers and thunderstorms will
continue the rest of the week into the weekend. Fog and low stratus
will be possible each morning in the mountain river valleys and also
in locations that receive heavy rainfall from diurnal thunderstorms.
