warning for the following rivers in Southwest Lower Michigan...
Portage River Near Vicksburg affecting Kalamazoo County
.Since the rain began Monday evening...over 3 inches of rain has
fallen across Kalamazoo County. The rain is beginning to taper off
some as of 215 am EDT...but additional rain will occur the
remainder of the night. Additional rainfall of a quarter of an
inch is possible through daybreak.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Safety message...Even 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock
you off your feet... and a depth of 2 feet will float your car.
Never try to walk... swim... or drive through such swift water. If
you come upon flood waters... stop... turn around and go another way.
This warning will be in effect until the river falls below its flood
stage.

An active pattern continues to be portrayed over the next several
days. Moisture will be feeding northward with rain developing over
Lower Michigan through Monday evening. Heavy rain is likely to
overspread portions of the forecast are Monday night into Tuesday
morning with some flooding possible. A brief period of dry
weather will settle in late Tuesday, before another round of
precipitation moves in for Wednesday. Additional chances for rain
exist each day through the remainder of the week. Temperatures
will stay near average through Friday with highs in the low to mid
80s and lows generally in the 60s. A cold front is anticipated by
Saturday, potentially bringing much cooler air by the end of next
weekend.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday night)

Much of the discussion is front-loaded with plenty to cover in the
first 24 hours. Heavy rain is certain with the primary question
being placement.
Visible satellite imagery is fairly impressive with the broad extent
of the cloud shield. High pressure is holding over the Southeastern
Atlantic Region with precipitation igniting around the western
periphery of the high. Moisture rich air continues to feed northward
from the Gulf into the Midwest, where excessive rainfall amounts
have already been observed. Precipitable water over these areas tops
2+ inches.
The biggest challenge is where to plant the axis of heaviest
rainfall. The consensus on timing has been rather consistent,
overnight tonight into early Tuesday morning with light rain
beginning this afternoon and evening. Earlier thoughts have been to
place the heaviest band of rainfall over the southeastern portions
of Lower Michigan. However, at this time yesterday, there were hints
that models were trending north. Models continue to have a spread
with the XHRRR showing the western extent of heavy rainfall just
southeast of Muskegon and the GFS/NAM leaning slight further
southeast.
One of the arguments for the northwest trend may be attributed to
the upper level dynamics. A coupled jet feature is depicted passing
over Lake Michigan tonight with a better Q-vector convergence
signature developing over the northern portions of Lake Michigan.
When relating this to today's rainfall, the heaviest fell in the
vicinity of this convergence region (Illinois). The counter argument
here would be the nocturnal LLJ, which is shown on the GFS solution
to be 50-60 kts, crossing from N. Indiana and northeastward through
Southern Lower Michigan. Some of this may be overdone, due to
convective feedback (PV response due to latent heating).
Nonetheless, even 30-40 kts would even be respected. The ECM has
more consistently been the middle ground option with A stripe of
heavy rain from SW Lower Michigan up through Port Huron.
Again...the greatest confidence in this forecast is that heavy rain
will fall tonight into Tuesday morning. PWAT values are most
certainly supportive, right along with the depth of the moisture
extending all the way up to the 300mb level in bufkit soundings.
Flood guidance suggests that 1-2 inch/hr rates over a period of 3
hours will create issues. We will have that type of moisture
available tonight. Total precipitation amounts have the potential
to overperform with solid 2-4 inch amounts through Southern Lower
Michigan and locally higher amounts possible in the heaviest swath.
The remainder of the period includes a brief lull in rainfall
between Tuesday evening and very early Wednesday morning. Another
system is expected to swing in from the northwest by dawn on
Wednesday. Additional showers and thunderstorms will be possible
through Wednesday with the best chances existing along and north of
I-96.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Monday)

There is little question a cool change is on the way for Southwest
Michigan temperatures for early next week. Prior to that Saturday
looks to be a rather wet day with showers and thunderstorms.
It would seem our quasi-zonal flow pattern is about to undergo a
significantly more meridional change. there has been trough over the
Gulf of Alaska for quiet some time now. That causes a ridge (weak)
over the western CONUS and weak / shallow trough over the central
CONUS, with a bermuda high over the Southeastern CONUS that extends
well east of the coast into the Central north Atlantic ocean. A
series of shortwaves on both the northern stream, currently north of
60N and the main polar jet around 45N causes most of the energy in
the Gulf of Alaska trough to relocate over from central Canada into
central United States by late in the coming weekend. This of course
will bring our first good surge of Canadian Polar air of the summer.
There is a fair amount of dynamics with digging the Central CONUS
trough over the weekend. This gives good support of thunderstorms.
Precipitable water rises to around 1.9" on Saturday which is near the
mean max for this time of year. There is a decent low level jet and
coupled jet feature at 300 mb to help the cause for thunderstorms
Saturday.

A mix of mvfr/ifr conditions will continue overnight due to
lowering cigs and significantly reduced visibility in moderate to
heavy rain. Rain showers will gradually taper off during the mid
to late morning hours Tuesday.
Conditions will slowly improve to predominantly mvfr and
eventually vfr Tuesday afternoon. Vfr conditions will then
continue through Tuesday evening. Some patchy fog may develop very
late Tuesday night. There is not enough potential for that to
occur through 06Z Wed to warrant inclusion in any of the terminal
fcsts at this time.

Aside from the rainfall, the forecast looks rather tame. Waves
are generally running around one foot or less. Showers and a few
thunderstorms are expected to develop through Monday afternoon
with heavy rain possible over southern sections of Lake Michigan
late tonight into Tuesday morning. Winds will generally stay
around 10 knots or less through Tuesday. Wednesday brings slightly
higher winds of around 15 knots, which could result in waves of
1-2 feet near the shore and 2 footers over open waters.

Widespread rain has become a virtual certainty late Monday afternoon
into Tuesday morning mainly SE of Muskegon - Mount Pleasant.
Widespread heavy rainfall totals around 2 to 4 inches are also
likely in many locations near and SE of Holland - Grand Rapids -
Alma, and across toward Jackson. Amounts greater than 4 inches
are certainly not out of the question. This rain will fall in the
same area which saw 2 to 5 inches of rain on Friday. As a result,
greater flood impacts are expected tonight compared to what happened
on Friday.
We expect above-bankfull rises of smaller river basins based on a
possibly conservative QPF of 2-3 inches. In anticipation of this
rain, we have river flood headlines for points at Vicksburg,
Jackson, Holt, and Eagle.
Generally light rain will arrive to start this evening, but once the
deep moisture and dynamics associated with the Louisiana-departed
tropical low arrive, rainfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour
should occur, and may last for at least a couple hours. This should
start after dark around the Kalamazoo - Battle Creek area and will
progress NE across the state overnight.
A deep almost entirely saturated tropical-source atmosphere will
advect into the area ahead of the low, resulting in PW values over 2
inches. Moderate amounts of 700-300 mb layer QG omega will occur
overnight (BOU Thaler computation), and more substantial 850-700 mb
convergence and lift will occur in the deformation zone on the nose
of the LLJ roughly in line with the track of the low. Lapse rates in
some mid-to-upper level layers may allow for weakly convective
parcels. Freezing levels will be around 14-15 kft. These factors
support efficient and mostly warm-process (collision-coalescence)
rainfall production.
