WAVES IN SHOALING AREAS. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR WAVES TO BREAK
MUCH FARTHER FROM SHOALING AREAS THAN IS NORMALLY EXPERIENCED.
REMEMBER...BREAKING WAVES CAN EASILY CAPSIZE EVEN LARGER VESSELS.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...The ridge of high pressure aloft will keep the area
dry for another day before giving way to an approaching storm
system which will bring widespread rainfall to the region Friday
evening into Saturday. Dry weather is expected Sunday and Monday,
before another system brings additional rain chances to
Northwestern California for the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION... More rain is on the way by late Friday. After the
mainly sunny skies of yesterday afternoon marine stratus has made
a strong push along the coast over night. As mentioned earlier the
marine clouds have thickened and spread along most of the coast
this morning. Areas of coastal fog also formed over night and will
persist into the late morning. The forecast question now is when
will the marine clouds and fog burn off as observations from this
morning show a pretty extensive fog bank along the coast with some
extension developing into the interior valleys. With light winds
and a similar synoptic pattern in place for the next day, we see
no reason not to expect the same thing again tonight into Friday
morning. With the approaching system it is expected that the
marine layer should deepen and push inland as it typically does
ahead of an approaching frontal system. As such, fog coverage was
continued in the grids.

The trend over the last few model runs has been to hold the ridge
in place a little longer, delaying the arrival of a shortwave
trough. This trend is continued this morning, and as a result
we've kept the timing of the rainfall for Friday, with it now
looking to reach coastal Del Norte and Humboldt counties by late
afternoon or evening (the latter is more likely). The overall
theme remains consistent, with a weak front associated with the
trough crossing the region Friday night/Saturday morning.
Widespread rainfall is still expected with this system, with
amounts likely remaining in the 1/4 to 1/2 inch range.

This system will move through quickly with drying beginning by
Saturday afternoon as the upper trough pulls out to the NE
rapidly. Another storm system crosses the area in the early to
middle portion of next week, bringing another chance for
widespread rainfall back to the region. /mkn

.AVIATION...LIFR stratus and even some areas of 1/4 mile fog remain
along the Redwood Coast early this morning...and this is likely to
persist through sunrise. Visibilities and ceilings should gradually
improve between an hour or two after sunrise and early afternoon,
finally scattering out somewhat during the afternoon. However, while
some improvement is likely this afternoon, particularly to
visibilities, there is the possibility that ceilings may never fully
emerge from IFR conditions in places along the Redwood Coast due to
a strong and persistent marine inversion. Ceilings are likely to
lower again quickly this evening. At UKI, some patchy shallow fog
will be possible through the remainder of the morning, followed by
VFR conditions through at least late this evening. /BRC

.MARINE...The large westerly swell that has persisted in the waters
over the past couple of days is now beginning to decay, as buoys
indicate that significant wave heights have fallen to between 11 and
13 feet with a dominant period of 15 seconds as of 3 am. While this
downward trend will continue due to persistent light winds and no
immediately imminent reinforcing swells, the small craft advisory
has been extended 6 hours to 9 am as seas may take a few more hours
to fall below 10 feet.  Seas will continue to settle through the
afternoon, but will remain somewhat elevated at a rolling 7 to 8
feet and 13 seconds.

This lull will be somewhat short-lived, however, as yet another
westerly swell will begin to build into the waters late tonight and
tomorrow morning ahead of an approaching front. Still, combined seas
will likely remain at a relatively modest 9 to 12 feet until Friday
afternoon and evening, at which point southerly winds will increase
to around 25 to 30 kt as a cold front passes through the waters.
This will cause steep southerly waves to build on top of the already
present westerly long period swell, resulting in large, mixed and
chaotic seas...especially across the northern outer waters where
winds will be strongest. Winds and seas will gradually subside
Saturday and Sunday, followed by yet another cold front and westerly
swell on Monday. /BRC
