Surface ridge of high pressure has moved into the forecast area this
afternoon, which is helping keep the area dry, which is in start
contrast to how the previous 24 hours have been, especially north of
Interstate 70 where some areas received over 5 inches of rain.  As a
result of the recent rains across northern Missouri and northern
Kansas several area streams are currently in flood.  This may come
into play over the next couple days as rains return to the forecast
area.

By late this evening, the surface ridge will move east of the area,
which will allow for return flow to bring warm/moist air northward,
back into the area. Isentropic ascent picks up again overnight along
the 295K to 305K Theta E surfaces, which should cause showers and
thunderstorms to reform later tonight. Rain chances will pick up
during the early morning hours from west to east where return flow
is a little more advanced. As these low level features transport
moisture and warmth northward a potent mid level wave will approach
the area, bringing increasing mid level southwest flow. Embedded
waves within the larger trough will then move through the area,
which will bring periods of showers and thunderstorms over the next
couple days. The best chance for widespread moderate to heavy rain
over the next 48 hours will likely be Friday and Friday night as the
mid level trough axis moves into and through the area, providing
ample support for ascent. Aside from the period of rain on Friday
and Friday night, pin pointing any real opportunity of rain will be
difficult, however with such a large amount of rain having fallen
across the area on Tue/Wed and with streams being swollen and
flooded, any further development will only further exacerbate the
ongoing flooding. And with Friday likely bringing another period of
moderate to heavy rain, it's almost a surety that the ongoing
river/stream flooding will continue, if not worsen through the late
part of the week and into the weekend. Flash flooding is also a
concern, given how saturated the soils are.

By the weekend another surface ridge will nose into the area which
will shunt most of the rain chances to the south of I-70. After a
relatively dry weekend across the area, the wet pattern will
continue into early next week with another trough moving through the
area, bringing several more rounds of rain.

VFR conditions should continue through the evening hours before
the trend gradually degrades overnight. Ample low-level moisture
will present a reduction in visibility and ceilings as early as 06Z,
though conditions should remain mostly dry overnight. A stray shower
or two is possible overnight, though precipitation should hold off
until closer to sunrise as showers over central and eastern Kansas
push into the area. At this time, ceilings look to decrease to near IFR
during the onset of precipitation. This activity should taper off
through the mid-morning with VFR conditions returning, before
isolated to scattered afternoon storms develop in the afternoon.
These will likely persist beyond the forecast period into Thursday
night.
