AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO 539 AM CST THU JAN 7 2016 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday) Issued at 356 AM CST THU JAN 7 2016 Early morning water vapor imagery shows the next shortwave trough centered over the Oklahoma Panhandle, with a large fetch of moisture streaming northward from the Gulf of Mexico into eastern Kansas. With increasing ascent approaching from the upper disturbance, reflectivity echoes have expanded in coverage over the past several hours across the region. High-res model guidance has depicted this scenario well and remains in good agreement with other deterministic models in the short-term. Anticipate widespread rain to overspread the forecast area throughout the daylight hours, with amounts averaging one-quarter to one-half inch. Temperatures remain steady or slowly warming with continued warm-air advection in advance of the shortwave trough, with readings in the middle 30s north to the lower 40s south. Not much change in diurnal temperatures are expected with the abundant cloud cover and precipitation across the region, but readings will creep up another 3-5 degrees by early afternoon from the current state. Shortwave ridging will evolve over the area on Friday as the CWA finds itself in between the upper disturbances. With only weak ascent on Friday, much of the day into the evening should be absent of notable precipitation. As the upper wave arrives, deep layer ascent will overspread the area with another round of precipitation developing. Some uncertainty remains to the exact evolution of the pattern and subsequent surface low track Friday night into Saturday. The general consensus is for a surface low to develop over the Arklatex region and move northeast to the Missouri Bootheel. With colder air advecting into the area, vertical temperature profiles will allow for a changeover from rain to snow from northwest to southeast beginning Friday evening. The primary precipitation axis with this evolution is expected to be located northwest of the surface low track over central Missouri, and likewise where the highest snowfall probability will reside. Elsewhere, a period of accumulating snowfall will be possible, with lighter amounts on the order of 1 inch or less. In the central Missouri corridor, 1-2 inches of snow will be possible by Saturday afternoon. There will likely be at least minor alterations to the locations with the highest snowfall potential, but models are beginning to cluster on this scenario. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Wednesday) Issued at 356 AM CST THU JAN 7 2016 Cold temperatures will be the main focus in the long-range period as several deep upper troughs push into the Great Lakes and eastern CONUS. Temperatures will fall quickly on Saturday evening behind the departing system, and the combination of north northwest winds and falling temperatures will bring the first below zero wind chills of the year to the majority of the area early Sunday morning. Lows that night will bottom out in the single digits to lower teens, and not much recovery is anticipated on Sunday as cold air continues to stream into the region.
