AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Des Moines IA 655 AM CDT Fri Sep 16 2016 .SHORT TERM.../Today/ Issued at 407 AM CDT Fri Sep 16 2016 There is a lot going on today. Aloft the upper low over the Northern Plains will drift East ending up in Western/Central MN by 00z. While several weaker shortwaves will eject out of the base of the larger trough...the main trough will not pass through the state until sometime late Friday night. This could potentially kick storms off over the forecast area through the day. At the surface the low will lift out of South Dakota into Northeast MN by 00z dragging a cold front through Western Iowa by 18Z...through central Iowa by 00Z and not through the forecast area until 06z. The front will pose yet another opportunity for storms to re-develop over the area. The caveat to all this is that the forcing is progged to outrun all of this and so this afternoon even with a shortwave in place and a boundary slowly pushing through the area the chance for storms is not particularly high. It appears that the best instability will be over Eastern Iowa and locations East by 18Z and thus I have mainly isolated storms progged for central Iowa with scattered showers/storms over the East/Southeast. There does appear to be a second shot of forcing and some vorticity late afternoon and evening over Northern MO into Southern/Southeast Iowa and this is actually where and when I feel our best threat is after the morning convection moves off. As for clouds...hi-res models keep lower ceilings over us through 18Z then gradually break us out toward later afternoon/evening. The cloud cover will help keep instability in check as well as temps. Highs will be in the mid 70s North and West and likely upper 70s central and South versus the 80 or so previously thought. .LONG TERM.../Tonight through Thursday/ Issued at 407 AM CDT Fri Sep 16 2016 The pattern will remain fairly summer-like, especially into next week with a period of central Plains ridging before a NW CONUS trough lowers heights and introduces SW flow late. Initially concerns will still revolve around our current system as the parent low exits the Dakotas into MN this evening. Much of the forcing will remain north of IA, but the combination of weaker lift south and weak convergence along the weak cold front may be sufficient for scattered convection along and just ahead of the front south and east during the evening. MLCapes may reach 1500 j/kg, but deep shear is weak so the severe threat appears minimal. Fair weather and seasonal temperatures are anticipated through much of the weekend as humidities drop off a bit. There will be a short wave passage early Sunday but the forcing and instability are nil. Weak return flow will develop close behind later in the day however and may increase instability just ahead of a weak front across MN to generate some peak heating convection and potentially clipping northeastern IA later in the evening, with another round possible east Monday and Monday evening as the front enters IA. Tuesday looks dry with the passage of surface high pressure but summer- like warmth and humidity will return by Wednesday. Strong theta-e advection may develop elevated convection north Tuesday Night with peak heating development also possible along and ahead of the southwest flow driven front from NE into MN late Wednesday and Wednesday Night, especially north. Although the best deep shear stays north, the GFS shows MLCapes pushing 2K j/kg so there will be some threat of strong to severe storms and locally heavy rains. Confidence in the details decreases somewhat into Thursday with the GFS more aggressive pushing the front through so just have blanket chance PoPs to account for the range of possibilities. Fairly confidence in some convection, but not location. && .AVIATION.../For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday night/ Issued at 655 AM CDT Fri Sep 16 2016 Showers/storms should wane across the area through 15Z then mainly looking at MVFR cigs becoming VFR.
