Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A fairly weak upper level low centered over the Cook Inlet region
and a zonally-oriented jet streak moving around the southern
periphery of the low are providing the steering flow for the
larger-scale weather systems moving around southern Alaska this
morning. A shortwave trough rotating about the upper low is
supporting the surface low as it races northeastward towards the
northern Panhandle. The shortwave is kinking the jet streak,
helping intensify the upper-level divergence over the low. This
low is departing the western Gulf, but steady rainfall persists
from southern Prince William Sound into the Gulf. Some of the
heavier rainfall over the northern Gulf has a convective look to
it on radar with smaller cellular echoes embedded within the
broader precipitation shield.

Instability caused by the upper level low over Cook Inlet is
helping slowly moving showers over the western Kenai Peninsula to
persist this morning. These showers too are mostly cellular in
nature, though as a whole they have been weakening steadily over
the past few hours. The 00Z Anchorage sounding shows the lowest
levels of the atmosphere remain nearly saturated. The cooler,
drier air above the saturated layer supports the instability the
showers over the Kenai Peninsula are using to persist.

Over Southwest Alaska, there is a much quieter radar picture this
morning. Weak showers are training along a narrow convergence zone
from Dillingham southward along the coast to Egegik and Pilot
Point. Elsewhere the mid-level cloud cover is rotating
southwestward around the upper low over Cook Inlet.

The most interesting weather over the next few days will be over
the southern Bering and Aleutians. A vigorous low is intensifying
south of the western Aleutians this morning. ASCAT Scatterometer
passes indicate gale force winds south of Adak and Atka. Close to
the center of the low, convection is strong enough to cause some
lightning activity to be detected. Meanwhile, high pressure
persists across the central and northern Bering, with widespread
stratus in place from the Pribilofs westward.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are all in excellent agreement on the synoptic pattern
through tomorrow night, with a building ridge over the eastern
Gulf and the Bering low tracking eastward along the Aleutians.
With the track of the low and its associated precipitation being
very well handled by all the models, forecast confidence is very
high.

The forecast challenge for Southcentral is primarily focused on
the winds. While the center of the low over the Gulf will continue
to track well east of the area, the associated winds resulting
from the strong gradient between the low and building high
pressure will impact much of Southcentral Alaska over the next
24-48 hours. Forecasting how strong the winds will be as they
funnel through the numerous bays, passes, and gaps will be
primarily determined by two factors. Initially, it will be where
exactly the low tracks, while tonight the primary driver will be
how strong a secondary leeside low, that develops along the
northern Gulf Coast tonight, gets once the broad flow turns
offshore. The high resolution models usually handle those details
the best, so they were the preferred this morning. However, even
among those, the differences are significant.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The moderate strength low over the northeastern Gulf this morning
will head inland across Southeast Alaska while the upper level low
near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula drops southward into
the Gulf. This will quickly bring an end to rain along the north
Gulf coast and Kenai Peninsula as deformation band breaks up with
shift in the flow. Tight surface pressure gradients from the
northeast Gulf low combined with strengthening northerly offshore
flow behind the upper center will lead to increasing winds area-
wide. This will lead to drying and warming, with subsidence under
increasingly sunny skies. The strongest winds will be along coastal
gaps including Seward, Whittier, and Valdez.

Winds will begin to diminish most places this evening as pressure
gradients weaken and high pressure builds in from the north and
west. It looks like at least a little wind will linger through
the night which will keep temperatures from dropping very much in
what would otherwise be a very chilly night with mostly clear
skies and a fairly cool air mass. Wind sheltered areas away from
the coast will likely completely decouple from the boundary layer
overnight, so a few isolated areas may see temperatures drop to
around freezing early tomorrow morning. Most notably, this
includes portions of East Anchorage, the Eagle River Valley, and
the Matanuska Valley. At this point do not think freezing temps
will be widespread enough to warrant a Freeze Warning, so will
opt to issue a Special Weather Statement.

Winds will hold on longest along the immediate coast, but will
die down completely by mid day Saturday. With high pressure
overhead it looks like a crystal clear day for most of the region.
The ridge will quickly slide eastward Saturday Night and Sunday,
opening the way for tropical moisture to stream northward toward
Mainland Alaska. Rain will reach Kodiak Island Saturday Night then
quickly spread northward to the rest of Southcentral on Sunday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Ridging will build in over Bristol Bay and Southwest Alaska today
and tonight bringing drier weather through Saturday. The next
incoming frontal system will reach the Alaska Peninsula Saturday
and the Southwest Alaska coast late Saturday night. In addition to
bringing widespread, moderate to heavy rainfall, the frontal
system will bring increasing east to southeast winds...especially
through gaps and passes in the Aleutian Range.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The North Pacific low south of the west and central Aleutians
will continue to strengthen as it tracks east northeast through
this evening. The low will reach its maximum depth tonight then
gradually fill as it continues northeast to be located just south
of the eastern Aleutians early Sunday morning. The associated
frontal system will spread across the Aleutians and into the
southern Bering, bringing rainy and windy conditions with it.
Further to the north, weak ridging will persist over the central
Bering.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Models are depicting a low pressure system tracking into the
Bristol Bay by Sunday afternoon with the associated weather front
tracking into the eastern Gulf of Alaska. This produces strong
pressure gradients with gusty southeasterly winds through the
Barren Islands as this frontal system moves northward. Therefore,
look for abundant moisture streaming into the Southcentral Alaska
region as the frontal boundary moves through the Prince William
Sound, and the Anchorage Bowl by Sunday afternoon. This synoptic
feature coincides with gusty Turnagain Arm, and gap winds before
tapering off into Monday. Meanwhile, the Bering Sea has high
pressure over the region, and a North Pacific Low south of the
Western Aleutians that tracks eastward along Aleutian Chain. This
system produces gale force easterly/northeasterly winds along the
Aleutian Chain, and the lower Bering before this systems elongates
into two low pressure systems by Sunday. Therefore, the central
Aleutians/Bering will transition to small craft advisory northerly
winds by Sunday accompanied by a showery weather regime pattern.
This synoptic feature transitions into a broad area of low
pressure over the eastern Bering before moving inland over the
Kuskokwim Delta region heading into Monday. By Monday evening the
next Bering low tracks into the West Aleutians, and moves along
the same pattern as previous system before being located near the
Eastern Aleutians by the midweek time-frame. This will keep the
temperatures in the upper 50s along the chain, and lower 60s in
the Southwest/Southeast Alaska coastal communities.

NIGHT AND MONDAY IN THE MAT-SU VALLEYS AND ALONG THE NORTH GULF
COAST...

AFTER SUNNY WEATHER ON SATURDAY A STORM SYSTEM WILL RAPIDLY MOVE
INTO THE AREA ON SUNDAY BRINGING HEAVY RAIN AND CAUSING SMALLER
STREAMS AND RIVERS TO RISE SIGNIFICANTLY. THE HEAVIEST RAIN IS
EXPECTED TO FALL ALONG THE GULF COAST AND AROUND PRINCE WILLIAM
SOUND, WITH LESSER BUT STILL SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL TOTALS IN
INTERIOR AREAS.

FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED, BUT SOME RIVERS AND STREAMS MAY RISE TO
NEAR BANKFULL BY MONDAY WHEN THE RAIN STARTS TO TAPER OFF. THE
RESURRECTION RIVER NEAR SEWARD MAY REACH THE LEVEL AT WHICH IT
BEGINS TO IMPACT THE RUNWAY AT THE SEWARD AIRPORT.

PEOPLE WITH PROPERTY NEAR RIVERS AND STREAMS OR THOSE RECREATING
OUTDOORS LATE THIS WEEKEND SHOULD PREPARE FOR HEAVY RAIN AND
ASSOCIATED SIGNIFICANT RISES IN THE RIVERS.
