SCT to ISOLD TS to favor the CONTDVD to E slopes of the central
MT chain this evening, with a secondary area across the E central
plains. Spottier activity should linger in the same area after
midnight.  An upper low will exit E tonight allowing drier air
into the state for Thursday. There will be a slight chance of dry
storms across the western MTs Thursday, with a better chance of
wetter variety storms mainly along the central MT chain. This
activity should drift SEWD over adjacent lowlands in the aftn.

.PREV DISCUSSION...302 PM MDT WED JUN 1 2016...
.SYNOPSIS...
Unsettled weather due to the combination of a cut off low over
northern Mexico and atmospheric instability and moisture will
continue the rest of today into the overnight hours. The main
focus for heavier rain will be found across south central and
southeast areas as well as the east slopes of the central
mountains tonight. A gradual warming and drying trend tied to
atmospheric ridging will occur Thursday and Friday with storms
generally sticking to the higher terrain. A back door cold front
is still expected to undercut the ridge during the weekend period
and lead to a few more showers and thunderstorms. Northeast areas
look to be favored at this time but that could change depending on
the strength of the cold front. Unsettled weather should continue
the earlier half of next week and mainly be tied to the
interaction between the upper ridge and the next Pacific low. Stay
tuned on that!

.DISCUSSION...
Lowered PoPs across some areas due to stability concerns but
raised them in other areas due to expected destabilization.
Southern areas and areas along and east of the central mtns should
be favored tonight.

The atmosphere will go into recycle mode in terms of trapped
moisture within the upper ridge on Thursday/Friday. The cut off
low currently found over the El Paso area will continue eastward
and eventually provide a subsidence area on the back side of it. At
the same time...an upper ridge will strengthen and provide a
warming and overall drying trend. Due to the building
ridge...steering flow for the storms will be more northerly with
day to day and area to area fluctuations. Either way...the main
shower and thunderstorm action will be found over the high
terrain. Didnt change PoP/WX coverage all that much for Thu/Fri.
Very little change to temps either although raised the midslope
areas slightly due to inversion effects.

Models remain consistent in showing the upper ridge remaining over
the intermountain west during the weekend. Another back door cold
front...although less intense...is expected to push into the east
and reinvigorate shower and thunderstorm development along and
east of the central mtns. Suspect the front could end up being a
little stronger than what the models are currently advertising so
will be watching that trend. Either way...the main intensification
in terms of thunderstorm coverage looks to be found across the
east slopes of the central mtns. The steering flow for the storms
should change slightly due to the approach of the next Pacific
low.

The models will continue to have a hard time dealing with the
Pacific low and upper ridge interaction the earlier half of next
week. The Pacific low could either undercut the ridge like it has
been doing the past few weeks or ride up and over or through it.
Too early to say right now. Expect some changes in the models
during the next few days.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Upper low across southeast New Mexico remains on track to shift east
of the area tonight. Northerly flow on the east side of a strong
upper level ridge over the desert southwest will dominate the
weather pattern across New Mexico through Saturday. Dry air will
work in from the north on Friday, limiting afternoon and early
evening thunderstorm chances to a few across the northern mountains.
A relatively weak backdoor front is forecast to drop into the
eastern plains Saturday, returning low level moisture and chances
for mainly isolated thunderstorms from the central mountain chain
ewd.

Models remain in good agreement that heights rise Sunday and Monday
as the upper level ridge axis inches ewd to near the NM/AZ line.
Temperatures warm to near or slightly above seasonal averages
areawide by Monday, continuing through Wedesday. Enough mid-level
moisture remains in place for a few high based showers or
thunderstorms to develop each afternoon Mon-Wed, mainly across the
western and northern mountains. West winds increase somewhat across
western NM Sunday afternoon behind the mid-level ridge axis. GFS and
ECMWF agree that breezy to locally windy conditions develop areawide
Monday but remain below critical thresholds.

Ventilation rates on Thursday remain poor to fair east of the
central mountain chain. Vent rates increase into the good to
excellent range areawide Friday, only to drop once again to the poor
to fair range across the east Saturday. Vent rates return to the
very good to excellent range areawide Monday through mid-week next
week.
