Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches across much of the upper Dan River basin in the past 12 to 18
hours will cause flooding along the mainstem Dan from Danville to South Boston.
Numerous creeks and smaller streams are already flooding and all this runoff is
headed for the Dan.

A major precipitation event is forecast to affect the Dan and Roanoke river basins
beginning Friday into Saturday with widespread rainfall of 3 to 5 inches with
isolated amounts up to 8 inches. This will lead to renewed or increased flooding
along the Dan and lower Roanoke Rivers. Although both Danville and Randolph areas
now below flood stage and additional rise are likely bringing both rivers to at
least Moderate flood stage.
Please note these forecasts are completely dependent on the forecast rainfall.
If it does not occur in the amounts forecast...river stages will be much lower. If
rainfall exceeds current forecasts then rivers may crest into the Major flood
stage category.

Rainfall increased some overnight...with the affected areas generally
receiving 1/2 to 1 inch of rainfall overnight. Light to moderate rainfall
will continue through the morning...then diminish during the afternoon
and evening. Additional rainfall amounts today are expected to be 1/2
inch or less. The ground is totally saturated and any additional rainfall
will result in near total runoff into area creeks and streams. Minor to
occasional moderate rises may still occur through the day and evening.
However...with the rainfall amounts greatly reduced from what was earlier
expected...some locations that have fallen below flood levels and may not
rise back above during this event at all. Most flooding at this point will
be minor...although low end moderate flooding is still forecast on the
Dan River at South Boston.

Stages along the Dan River continue to fall rapidly with Paces
likely below flood stage although the gage has been stuck at
a reading above flood stage. There is a large debris blockage
at the bridge and the gage may have been damaged. The river at
South Boston has crested and will fall rapidly through the day
to below flood stage by this evening.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Do not drive through flooded areas...the water may be much deeper

LOW PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO WILL TRACK
NORTHEAST TODAY AND WILL MOVE ALONG THE APPALACHIANS THROUGH THE
FORECAST AREA BETWEEN 18Z/2PM THIS AFTERNOON AND 06Z/2AM TONIGHT.
THE 00Z GFS AND LATEST RAP GUIDANCE WERE SLIGHTLY FASTER WITH THE
TIMING OF THIS LOW THAN THE NAM. ALL MODEL SHOWED INCREASING EAST
TO SOUTHEAST WINDS AND UPSLOPE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE LOW WHICH
WILL AIDE IN HIGHER RAINFALL AMOUNTS ON THE EAST SLOPES OF THE
BLUE RIDGE. THE BEST SYNOPTIC SCALE LIFT ALONG WITH THE BETTER JET
DYNAMICS REMAINED ALONG AND JUST WEST OF THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE
FORECAST AREA. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE
EXPECTED RAINFALL AND THE IMPACTS FROM THIS RAIN FOR TODAY INTO
WEDNESDAY MORNING.
STARTING OUT VERY MILD WITH SURFACE DEW POINTS IN THE LOWER 60S TO
