AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED AVIATION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ST LOUIS MO 645 AM CDT Sat Jun 13 2015 .SHORT TERM: (Through Late This Afternoon) Issued at 357 AM CDT Sat Jun 13 2015 Focus today will be PoPs. Forecast for today is mainly persistence with some minor changes. Expect ongoing TSRA across wrn MO into ern KS to continue to lift more nwd than ewd. Mdls prog best moisture convergence spreading from central MO newd into west central IL thru this afternoon. Uncertainty remains regarding how much coverage will be for areas to the SE of a KCOU to KUIN line. However, expect at least sct TSRA to develop across the ern Ozarks aided by a weak s/w rounding the nrn fringes of the upper ridge. As for temps today, not much change yesterday. Portions of central MO may be slightly cooler as precip moves into the area sooner. Otherwise, persistence forecast appears to be on track for today. Tilly .LONG TERM: (Tonight through Friday) Issued at 357 AM CDT Sat Jun 13 2015 High rainfall totals over the next several days and their impacts are the primary concern for this forecast. A synoptically favorable period of persistent and high rain chances will exist from the end of the weekend thru the middle of next week. Much of this period will feature SW flow aloft, regular intrusions/ interactions with upper level disturbances, high levels of moisture thru the column with PWs in the neighborhood of 2 inches, and very weak daytime CINH where any boundary will be able to trigger convection in a virtual free-for-all. Of particular focus is the tracks of upper level disturbances, the rain they create, and their influence on the main surface frontal boundary. By Sunday, the surface front will begin to the north and west of our region, but the "rain train" from training upper level disturbances should at least force the effective boundary further to the southeast to result in likely PoPs for much of our region. Some retreat of the effective boundary can be expected back to the northwest Sunday night. The training upper disturbances and the resultant "rain train" will trend the effective boundary a bit more southeast each day thru Tuesday and have expanded likely PoPs into more of our region each day. To cap off the wet period Wednesday, potentially, is a system of tropical origins that is being picked up by the GFS and Canadian models that could be the worst thing we need (widespread 3-5" of rain in 24hrs) after what should be an already wet period (2-5" of rain over several days). The good news is that this tropical system hasn't even formed yet in the western Gulf of Mexico and there is plenty of time for something to change in the meantime. An alternate solution is brought forth on the EC model which lifts the front back to the north and places us into a temporary quieter wx zonal flow by late Wednesday and into Thursday. A Hydrological Outlook (ESFLSX) that addresses potential impacts of this prolonged wet period was issued Friday afternoon and will be re-issued with this package. High rain chances and clouds will help suppress temps, but if some some sunshine can be seen for a period during the day, temps should easily get above climo (mid 80s+), especially as long as the synoptic front is to the north, such as thru Monday and perhaps beyond Wednesday.
