.River levels have been rising the last couple days in response to
recent rainfall. Latest indications suggest the river will rise above
flood stage Sunday afternoon.
The following forecasts are based on observed precipitation, soil
moisture conditions, and forecast precipitation for the next 72
hours. More heavy rainfall is expected beyond this time frame,
which will result in additional rises well into next week. People
with interests along the river should monitor later forecasts closely.

The Embarras River is expected to remain below flood stage through
Saturday, but will begin to flood Saturday night. More significant
rises are anticipated by Sunday afternoon, due to heavy rainfall
that will be affecting the area. This heavy rain is likely to
persist through early in the new week, and is expected to accumulate
from 4 to 6 inches. As a result, moderate flooding is expected to
develop.
The following forecasts are based on observed precipitation, soil
moisture conditions, and forecast precipitation through Monday
morning. Note this forecast range does not fully incoporate the

Embarras River at Lawrenceville affecting Lawrence County.
.Significant rainfall of 2 to 5 inches occurred Saturday and Saturday
night on the upper reaches of the Embarras River basin, as well
as the Wabash River basin. An additional 1.5 to 2 inches is likely
to fall through Monday. Rapid rises will continue at Ste. Marie, and
the river should rise above flood stage this evening. The river rise
will become quicker at Lawrenceville overnight. With flooding
occurring on the Wabash River, backwater effects will keep the
Embarras River in flood much of the week.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Lincoln IL 848 PM CST THU DEC 24 2015 .UPDATE... ISSUED AT 842 PM CST THU DEC 24 2015 Shortwave trof across northeast Iowa this evening will track northeast away from our area overnight. Some spotty light rain was associated with the upper wave today and that has ended over the forecast area. The front that pushed through our area last evening was not that far away, roughly from central Tennessee through eastern Kentucky. That boundary may become active again later tonight into Friday morning with a band of showers expected to push northeast along the front, well south of our area. A few light showers/sprinkles may develop north of the main band of showers in southeast Illinois later this evening, but forecast soundings not supportive of much else. The Iowa shortwave has a weak surface boundary associated with it that is forecast to push across our area late tonight, but little if any weather is expected with that, other than a wind shift. Weak high pressure will then move across the area on Christmas Day with another unseasonbly mild day in store for central Illinois with highs ranging from the mid 40s northwest to the mid 50s southeast. Current grids handling the evening trends well, so no ZFP update will be necessary at this time. && .SHORT TERM...(Tonight) ISSUED AT 337 PM CST THU DEC 24 2015 Area of very light showers has moved out of Missouri early this afternoon along an 850 mb thermal axis. Ceilings below it have only dropped to around 5,000 feet as the air below the axis remains rather dry, so little in the way of accumulation is expected. Temperatures south of I-70 have reached into the 50s as the thicker cloud cover only recently moved in, but most of central Illinois is in the low-mid 40s, still mild for Christmas Eve. Very weak ripples in the upper flow are helping to form these light showers, and several of the higher resolution models are suggesting potential for similar light showers a bit further south this evening, thus have introduced slight chance PoP's along the I-70 corridor. Overnight, the stationary frontal zone over the Tennessee Valley will begin to push northward as the broad upper trough over the Rockies begins to sharpen. Precipitation in the baroclinic zone will push northward past the Ohio River late in the night, but currently think that our southeast CWA will remain dry, as there will be a decent northeast flow associated with high pressure drifting northeast toward the Wisconsin/Illinois border. Little change was made to the forecast low temperatures, ranging from the lower 30s northwest of Peoria to the 40-45 degree range along and south of I-70. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Thursday) ISSUED AT 337 PM CST THU DEC 24 2015 High pressure will drift across the Great Lakes region Friday keeping a frontal boundary pushed just southeast of the central IL forecast area over the Ohio River Valley...keeping conditions dry over much of central IL with just a slight chance of rain in southeast IL. Increasing southwesterly flow will develop Saturday pushing this frontal boundary northward back into central IL. Instability looks to be sufficient for thunderstorms into much of central IL Saturday...especially in the southeast and have continued this scenario in the afternoon forecast package. As copious Gulf moisture interacts with the boundary Saturday and Saturday night...steady moderate to heavy rainfall continue to look on track for Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. The axis of heaviest rainfall currently looks to be along the I-70 corridor at this time. A northern stream shortwave continues on track to push the boundary back southward on Sunday into Sunday night...diminishing rainfall chances especially north of I-72. By this point...rainfall amounts to around 3 inches are possible around the I-70 corridor...while amounts taper down to around a half inch from around Peoria northwestward. Some cold air pushing southward Sunday night following the northern shortwave could produce a changeover to frozen precipitation Sunday night. Next challenge will timing the eventual ejection of the Desert Southwest upper low and the northward return of the rainfall. Models are in fair agreement on timing of the system ejecting across the central IL area Monday night...although depth of the low and cold air ingested into the system and exact track make precipitation type highly uncertain across the central IL area. Enough instability will be present to mention a chance for a few thunderstorms across the E/SE CWA. Have incorporated snow/mix of rain snow as a blend of model possibilities for now. Once the low lifts into the Great Lakes, precip will come to an end on Tuesday or Tuesday night. Yet another system indicated midweek...however this does not look to be associated with significant precipitation at this time. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening) ISSUED AT 520 PM CST THU DEC 24 2015 VFR conditions are expected thru most of this forecast period. Will have to keep an eye out for the possibility for some MVFR vsbys in fog and some patchy lower clouds edging in from the west after 06z tonight. For now, will keep vsbys at 6 miles or greater hold off any mention of low MVFR cigs at PIA or SPI. A weak frontal boundary is forecast to push across the area later this evening with winds ahead of the front veering into a southerly direction and then shifting into the northwest at 5 to 10 kts in the 08z-12z time frame.
