The warm front was splitting the forecast area, and right through the
KC Metro. Very unseasonably warm and exceptionally moist air was
poised south of the front. Through the day, that front should become
more defined and lift into the northern portions of the forecast area.
This will result in a large range of temperatures across the forecast
area, with far northwestern Missouri hovering in the lower 50s, and
parts of west central to central Missouri warming to near 70 degrees.
Little variation in the temperature is expected Saturday night as the
warm front will remain draped over northwestern Missouri and strong
warm and moist advection persists. So lows Saturday night/Sunday
morning will likely be in the 60 degree range before cooling off
later in the day as the surface low lifts north of the area. Still,
it isn't until Sunday night that enough cold air moves into the
region to return temperatures closer to normal and lows by Monday
morning should fall into the 30s.
The other aspect of this storm system will be the moderate to heavy
rainfall expected. Precipitable water values are above the 99th
percentile, so this is an extremely anomalous air mass. With
abundant moisture, widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is expected
from Saturday night through Sunday with rainfall amounts ranging from
about 1.5 to as much as 2.5 inches. Instability continues to look
like the limiting factor regarding potential for severe weather.
MUCAPE values the last few nights have been around 500 J/kg and this
just doens't look to be enough to balance out the high shear values.
Forecast soundings also show a very skinny CAPE profile due to the
weak lapse rates and deep, almost tropical, moisture. That said,
there may be a few strong storms with potential for strong winds
mixing to the surface.
On the back side of this system, models have gotten a little cooler
aloft, particularly the NAM, and there is a reasonable chance we see
some light snow mix into the area Sunday night. The NAM is very
aggressive with this and actually has several inches of snow across
northwestern Missouri. It is also stronger with its depiction of the
trowal than other models overnight. The ECMWF and the GFS are not as
bullish, but they still bring light amounts of snow. For now, have
added a mention of rain/snow in northwestern Missouri where it looks
like the best combination of cold air aloft and cool enough surface
temperatures aligns. But wouldn't be surprised if this expanded upon
in later runs as other higher resolution guidance picks up on the
dynamic cooling associated with the back side of this system.
On the heels of the weekend system, another strong storm system will
track from the southwestern US through the Plains and into the Upper
Midwest. The previous system will have scoured away much of the
moisture, but the strong forcing with this wave may be enough to
wring out enough moisture for some light precipitation across
northwestern Missouri Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. It's the
air mass that moves into the region in wake of this system the
finally cools us down back to or perhaps below normal through the
end of the week.

While there is some uncertainty regarding the transition to poorer
visibility and low ceilings, by this afternoon conditions are
expected to be IFR. Conditions may worsen overnight to LIFR or VLIFR,
mainly due to low ceilings. But once the conditions become IFR this
afternoon, they should remain IFR or lower through the remainder of
the forecast. While winds are light at issuance time, winds will
increase from the south through the day. By this evening, winds will
be gusting to the 20 to 25 kt range. Winds will be steady from the
south through the forecast.
