Well, for early July this happens to be one cool wet day. Moisture
feed from the Gulf, in combination with a little shortwave trough,
helped generate a considerable amount of light and moderate rain
across Missouri today. Surface low associated with the trough is
working northeast through central Missouri and is taking the focus
for the rain with it. Scattered showers are noted father to the
west, but widespread activity with any significant accumulations
looks to be ending for today as the trough exits.

As a bit of a side note, it looks like we will be breaking the
record low high temperature for today's date in Kansas City thanks
to the rain and cloud cover. The old record low high temperature
value for today, July 8th, is 70 degrees from the year 1891. The
lowest record low high temperature for the entire month of July is
64 degrees, which occurred July 6th 1979. Currently, the all time
record is safe as Kansas City scratched out a high of 66 degrees at 1
AM this morning. I spy with my little eye a midnight high, provided
we don't warm above 65 degrees this afternoon.

For Tonight and Friday...with the exiting of today's weather system
accumulating rain will quickly leave the region with only a spit or
sprinkle possible through the evening hours. However, this slight
reprieve from precipitation wont last long as enough trough is
exiting the Desert Southwest, and will likely bring more storms to
eastern Kansas and Missouri Thursday. Rain chance will slowly
increase through the day, but best chances for more storms looks to
arrive Thursday night as the low level jet gets going and starts
interacting with a warm front that will lift north through the
region that night. Shear and instability with the Thursday activity
looks insufficient for severe weather, though flooding might be a

With the warm front lifting north Thursday night expect temperatures
Friday to be back to a more normal July level, with highs back in the
hot and humid 80s. Additionally for Friday, there will be a lingering
chance for storms through the day as the overnight activity lifts
north and another weak trough zips across the Plains Friday afternoon
and night.

For the weekend and into next work week...it will feel more like a
normal summer. Broadly speaking, as a cutoff low over the east
Pacific fills and gets absorbed into the mean flow a decent ridge
will work its way east into the Plains States. With this will come a
fair amount of hot and humid air, pushing highs into the 90s and
heat index values to around 100 degrees. Currently, the worst day
looks to be Monday; but Saturday, Sunday and Monday cold all be
sweltering. However, the ridge should push the focus for storm
activity to our north through the weekend and into Monday, but there
is still some potential for storms Saturday night as activity roles
off the High Plains possibly clipping northern Missouri both
Saturday and Sunday night. Otherwise, as we transit Monday models
advertise a combination of shortwave troughs forcing the storm track
back to the south for late Monday and Tuesday. This should take the
edge off the heat for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Areas of light rain or drizzle still possible at the terminals
this evening as upper low moves eastward and weak surface high
pressure builds in. Mid and upper level clouds may become
scattered, but MVFR and IFR cloud decks are expected overnight
with the potential for fog to develop given abundant low level
moisture in place. Low clouds will begin to scatter out by 13-15Z
tomorrow morning with winds becoming southeasterly.

.CLIMATE...

It looks like we will be breaking the record low high temperature
for today's date in Kansas City (KMCI) thanks to the rain and cloud
cover. The old record low high temperature for today, July 8th, is
70 degrees from the year 1891. The lowest record low high temperature
for the entire month of July is 64 degrees, which occurred July 6th
1979. Currently, the all time record is safe as Kansas City scratched
out a high of 66 degrees at 1 AM this morning. I spy with my little
eye a midnight high, provided we don't warm above 65 degrees this
afternoon. But, it does appear at this time that we will break the
old record low high temperature for this date.
