AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED AVIATION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ST LOUIS MO 603 AM CDT Fri Jul 4 2014 .SHORT TERM: (Through Late This Afternoon) Issued at 316 AM CDT Fri Jul 4 2014 A surface ridge was right over Missouri early this morning with unseasonably cool temperatures across the region again. There was patchy low level clouds across the area along with patchy fog across portions of IL, especially in the BLV area. There will likely be scattered diurnal cumulus or stratocumulus clouds across much of the area today. High temperatures will continue to be below seasonal normals, but a couple of degrees warmer than yesterday as winds become southeasterly this afternoon as the surface ridge axis shifts east of the forecast area and upper level heights rise some as the upper level trough over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions shifts eastward. GKS .LONG TERM: (Tonight through Thursday) Issued at 316 AM CDT Fri Jul 4 2014 Surface high is forecast to continue its retreat into the eastern U.S. throughout the weekend, which will mean a gradual uptick in temps each day and night. Humidities will remain fairly low through Saturday but should make a noticable jump by the latter half of the weekend, with the combination of increasing temperatures and humidities giving the region much more typical July conditions by Sunday and Monday. Have backed off on temps just a bit over southeast sections of the CWA tonight as remnants of surface ridge (with light winds, low dewpoints, and mainly clear skies) will continue to impact this area; otherwise, going temp trends looks quite good. As far as precipitation is concerned...although the CWA is forecast to remain on the southern fringes of the westerlies throughout the weekend, all of the synoptic scale models suggest some weak shortwave energy (possibly an MCV) pushing into northern sections of the FA on Saturday, with remnants of this feature and perhaps other bits of energy continuing to impact the area through Sunday through Monday. While it appears that the shra/tsra threat will be slow to spread into southeast sections of the CWA, other details of the exact evolution of the shower and thunderstorm threat is still uncertain at this point. Therefore, have gone with consensus of 00z data (which also closely follows trends of going forecast) with slight chance and chance PoPs over nw parts of the CWA on Saturday, with this threat gradually overspreading the remainder of the CWA by Sunday night and Monday. Whether approaching cold front will cause a significant uptick in PoPs on Monday is questionable at this point, as as mid level temps are forecast to warm into the +10 to +12C range. Models are forecasting formation of broad trof over the central CONUS for much of the upcoming work week. The resultant dip in the westerlies should allow a series of shortwaves to work across the area, resulting in shower and thunderstorm chances for much of the week. Weak cold front that pushes across the region on Monday/Monday night will produce only a modest change in airmass, which should leave temperatures near or a bit below seasonal averages Tuesday-Friday. Any fog should dissipate by 13Z this morning. Patchy clouds at 6000 ft will move through the taf sites early this morning. Models are indicating sufficient moisture around 5000 ft in height for scattered diurnal cumulus clouds to develop late this morning and afternoon. Light surface winds will become e-sely by late morning and afternoon as the surface ridge now over the taf sites shifts slowly eastward. Specifics for KSTL: A band of 6000 ft clouds will drop southward through STL early this morning. Scattered diurnal cumulus clouds can also be expected late this morning and afternoon. The light surface wind will increase to around 6-8 kts by afternoon from an ely direction.
