ISSUED 900 PM CDT Tue Jul 1 2014 Cirrus overcast will linger across our southeastern counties as the storm complex just southeast of our counties drifts away to the SE. Showers should come to an end in that area by 9 pm. NW of the Illinois river, a narrow region of lift and showers progress eastward and affect areas from Galesburg to Peoria to El Paso between 9 pm and midnight. Otherwise, skies should generally clear out for a few hours overnight before the low-mid level moisture increases with the arrival of a longwave trough from the northern Plains. We should see cloudy skies develop before sunrise NW of the IL river, then increase over the remainder of central and SE IL Wed morning. Low temps in the latest MOS guid and even high res models matches well with our current forecast lows. We expect colder air to filter into the area on WNW winds, helping lows drop into the mid 50s around GBG, with mid 60s toward LWV. Surface dewpoints will begin to drop as well. Dewpoint depressions will dip below 5 in most locations, so some light ground fog will be possible toward sunrise. It should generally not be a travel problem, so will leave it out of the grids for now. Updates in the grids were mainly to weather/PoPs to match current conditions and expected trends. ISSUED 646 PM CDT Tue Jul 1 2014 The storm complex across southern IL will push some mid-clouds over DEC and CMI for the first couple hours of the TAFs, but clear skies should develop by mid-evening for all terminal sites. Diurnal cumulus upstream over Iowa should generally dissipate early this evening. A much deeper moisture layer across the Dakotas, MN and NW Iowa will arrive from the NW late tonight. Timing tools in AWIPS puts the VFR cloud deck in PIA around 08z and BMI toward 09z. The upper low and cold pool associated with that system will churn southward on Wednesday, as 850mb temps drop to around 6C. Steep low level lapse rates and ample low to mid level moisture will create cloudy skies for a majority of the day on Wed. A few light showers are possible, along with some cold-air funnels. No precip was included in the TAFs with this issuance, but a few locations may see enough light rain to measure a couple hundredths of an inch. Winds will be gusty from the west until 01z-02z around PIA, closer to the tighter pressure gradient. Other TAF sites should dip below 10kt shortly after 01z as diurnal decoupling develops. ISSUED 248 PM CDT Tue Jul 1 2014 The next few days will be characterized by mostly quiet and cooler than normal conditions across central and southeast Illinois. Then, organized shower and thunderstorm chances return to start next week, with temperatures becoming warmer and more humid. SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday: The frontal boundary that brought showers and thunderstorms to much of the forecast area last night is still in the vicinity of our southeast counties. While dew points in the have fallen off, despite light surface winds still having a southerly trajectory, CAPE values south of I-70 in our area are around 1000 j/kg (and forcing from a MCV over MO will likely brush by). So, we cant rule out a stray shower or thunderstorm in this area until things stabilize more later this evening. Otherwise, cooler than normal air will continue to spill into the area over the next few days on northerly flow, with 850 MB temperatures apt to be in the single digits from Wednesday into Friday. The axis of the coldest air will swing through later Wednesday into Wednesday evening, associated with a vigorous trof currently diving southeast across the northern Plains. This trof and associated cold air should be accompanied by abundant cloud cover as it swings through, and a few showers can't be ruled out, especially across far northern sections of the forecast area. Clouds will diminish Thursday as the trof shifts east of the area. However, the cooler conditions will not moderate much until late Friday as low level return flow begins to develop on the back side of a departing surface high. While a little cooler than normal, conditions look nearly perfect for July 4th (unless you were hoping for a beach day). LONG TERM...Saturday through Tuesday: Upper level flow remains at least slightly northwest through the extended range of the forecast. However, southerly low level return flow behind a departing surface high will push conditions to more summer-like heat and humidity by early next week. While the details are still a little murky, most models continue to suggest precipitation chances returning early next week courtesy of weak northwest flow impulses and the MCSs they will likely trigger.
