AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE KANSAS CITY/PLEASANT HILL MO 649 AM CDT Tue Jun 17 2014 .DISCUSSION... Issued at 419 AM CDT TUE JUN 17 2014 Mesoscale convective system from earlier severe weather across Nebraska and Iowa is currently moving eastward through eastern Iowa into Illinois. As the system moved east it put out an outflow boundary, which is trailing southward through extreme northern Missouri. Generally expect this outflow to be a non player today as strong southerly winds should cause it to wash out before the day really gets going. A relatively strong cap should persist over the forecast area despite surface temperatures reaching the lower 90s, mitigating any real chance for rain through the day. Humid conditions characterized by dew points in the lower to perhaps middle 70s will aid in bringing about heat indices in the upper 90s to lower 100s later this afternoon/evening. Expect the warm and muggy conditions to persist through at least Wednesday, as the strong low level southerly winds continue to bring warm/moist air into the area. Expect a virtual repeat of Tuesday on Wednesday with little to no chance for any thunderstorm activity and hot, oppressive conditions, characterized by heat indices approaching 100 degrees. The next chance for rain will likely occur Wednesday night in Thursday morning as good SWly flow in the mid-levels spreads over the area, allowing for pressure heights to lower. Thursday could bring one or more chances for convection through the day, evening, and overnight period. Given the strong instability over the area, in the neighborhood of 3000 J/kg of CAPE, thunderstorms will be likely, however the lack of any really great directional or speed shear should preclude widespread severe weather. Given the high values of CAPE an isolated severe storm could form, but again, widespread severe weather is not anticipated on Thursday. Friday through the weekend should see a general down trend in rain chances, however mid level flow does remain over the area, so any convection that forms farther west will have a chance to ride the flow eastward into the lower plains. Given the uncertainty of the timing and location of these events, have kept low end chance PoPs thought the weekend time frame. Also expect temperatures to take a downtrend after the hot/muggy mid week time frame.
