AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.DISCUSSION...

Tonight through Tuesday...Breezy southwesterly winds will
continue through tonight though mainly dry conditions are
expected. As the upper-level ridge breaks down late tonight,
increasing westerly flow aloft will bring increasing moisture to
areas along the Rocky Mountain Front and have added a slight
chance of snow showers. Areas of blowing snow are also possible.
The progressive weather pattern will persist into the early part
of the week as the next Pacific trough approaches the Northern
Rockies. Pressure gradients along the Rocky Mountain Front will
tighten as this system approaches and strong winds will prevail
along the Rocky Mountain Front though confidence is not high that
widespread high winds are expected. Gusty winds are also
anticipated over the north-central plains. Will continue to
closely monitor the situation. The upper-level trough and
associated surface cold front will move into the Treasure State
Monday night into Tuesday with light snow possible along the
Continental Divide and southwest mountains beginning Monday
evening. The chance for light snow will spread into the central
plains/valleys early Tuesday morning with snow accumulations of 1
to 3 inches possible through Tuesday evening as a secondary
shortwave moves over the area. Higher elevations above pass level
can expect snowfall accumulations of 3 to 6 inches. Confidence on
snow amounts is low given the difference between forecast models.
At this time, am not anticipating the need for winter weather
highlights given the model discrepancies but will continue to
monitor the situation. Temperatures will be slightly above
seasonal averages on Monday and near to slightly below seasonal
averages on Tuesday in the wake of the cold frontal passage. MLV

Tuesday night through Sunday night...Medium range models
are in reasonably good agreement on general trends into Saturday
but significant differences emerge by Sunday. An upper ridge will
move over the area Tuesday night and will be followed by the next
upper trough Wednesday night. This trough does not look to be
particularly wet so expect some snow showers over the mountains
with isolated snow showers for the southwest valleys and possibly
the plains. Thereafter expect a northwest flow aloft ahead of the
next upper ridge. Models indicate the possibility of some snow
showers continuing over the mountains until the upper ridge gets
closer Friday night into Saturday. By late Saturday models start
to show some differences as the ECMWF model moves the ridge into
eastern Montana while the GFS and GEM models keep the upper ridge
west of the Continental Divide. By Sunday the ECMWF has a deep and
wet upper trough over Montana while the GFS has southwest flow
aloft and the GEM model has a weather disturbance approaching from
the northwest. Other guidance for Sunday points to the upper ridge
continuing over Montana. Due to model differences have taken the
cue from the Billings weather office and gone with climatological
chances of precipitation with scattered snow showers over the
mountains and isolated rain/snow showers for lower elevations. As
has been advertised expect a warming trend into the weekend.
Although went with highs in the mid 40s to mid 50s for
Saturday..could see a few highs over the east slopes approach 60.

High pressure ridge moving across Montana will keep skies mostly
clear through this evening.  A surface trof east of the Rockies will
keep breezy to gusty southwest winds across Central Montana, with a
broad area of gusts reaching 25 to 35 kts expected.  Winds should
taper off somewhat after sunset but will remain breezy between KGTF
and KCTB into tomorrow. Winds look to pick back up again after 12Z.
