...Strong to Severe Storms Expected Early Wednesday Morning With
Wind Damage and Isolated Tornadoes Being The Main Threats...

Now through This Afternoon...

Morning satellite imagery reveals partly to mostly cloudy skies
across the forecast area.  Temperatures have been slowly rising
since midnight with readings in the upper 50s in areas west of I-65
and in lower-middle 50s in areas east of I-65.  Local radars show a
little bit of isolated shower activity down in the Lake Cumberland
region.  This activity is very light and has been more or less
concentrated in that area over the last couple of hours.  Based on
the latest trends, will insert a small chance of showers into the
forecast.  Otherwise, the rest of the region should see mainly dry
conditions through remainder of the morning hours with cloudy skies
prevailing.  Temperatures will likely continue to slowly rise into
the upper 50s to near 60 in the west.

For today, upper level ridge axis will be located to the east of our
region.  With a potent trough digging to our west, we will be in a
very broad southwesterly flow.  This flow will bring increased
moisture and continued warm advection into our region.  Weak
isentropic lift associated with the warm advection scheme may lead
to some isolated-scattered convection across our northwestern third
of counties this afternoon.  Elsewhere, it should be rather dry, yet
breezy and mild through the afternoon hours.  Temperatures are still
a little tricky this afternoon given the anticipated amount of
clouds and its effects on insolation.  Latest guidance still brings
highs into the upper 60s to the lower 70s.  This is near record
highs for the date.  Should we get a little more sun, these records
could go down.

In addition to the mild temperatures, the pressure gradient is
expected to increase this afternoon.  This increase along with good
mixing will result in winds of 15-25 MPH with gusts of up to 35-40
MPH at times by late afternoon in the western sections of our
forecast area.  In the east, the gradient will be a bit weaker and
strengthen later tonight.  For this reason, a wind advisory will be
issued for areas west of I-65 for late this afternoon.

Tonight and Wednesday...

...High Confidence in Line of Strong to Severe Storms Early
Wednesday Morning...

Focus then shifts to a a potentially widespread severe weather event
for the overnight hours tonight.  The latest deterministic and
ensemble guidance continues to be relatively good agreement with the
development of a low pressure system to our west and then heading
northeast while deepening rapidly.  Associated trailing surface cold
front is then forecast to sweep through the region late tonight and
early Wednesday bringing much colder air to back to the region.

Tonight's guidance continues to advertise an increasing wind field
as a very intense low-level jet axis overspreads the area.  The
magnitude of the jet core continues to look extreme with 75-80kts of
850 hPa wind spreading across the region.  As this takes place,
strong convergence and lift aided by a coupled jet structure in the
mid-levels should result in strongly forced ascent along a
pre-frontal trough axis to our west.  These storms should fire up
rapidly to our west early in the evening hours and then push
eastward through our region during the overnight period.  The latest
guidance continues to highlight the timeframe of 06-12Z Wednesday
for our area.  In general, it still looks like the line will move
into our northwest/western sections after 06Z and then into the I-65
corridor around 4 AM EST and then over into the I-75 corridor by 8
AM EST.

Speed and directional shear profiles still look very impressive for
late January indicative of a highly anomalous event.  The latest
data still suggests that we could have a little more backed surfaced
flow tonight. This combined with the higher winds at the 925-850 hPa
levels would yield effective 0-3km storm relative helicity values of
over 900 m2/s2.  Surface instability looks a little more likely in
the latest data sets as well as temperatures hold in the lower 60s
overnight along with dewpoints above 60.  Thermodynamic profiles
still look good with surface based CAPE values in the 300-800 J/Kg
range with higher values to our south and southwest.

Given the shear and instability profiles, it is safe to say that
some sort of severe quasi-linear convective system (QLCS) will be
generated in this environment with the potential for mesovortices
and bowing segments.  It should be noted that while the parameters
in the data look good for severe weather, the magnitude and areal
extent of the severe weather is still uncertain.  Having such a
strong magnitude of shear may result in updrafts being pushed over.
However, the slight increase in instability and the strongly forced
ascent previously mentioned may overcome the shear and produce
widespread severe weather.

Primary severe weather threat will be damaging winds as storms will
likely be able to mix down the higher momentum air aloft.  The shear
profiles are also suggestive of mesovortices developing within the
main line along with bowing segments.  Thus, an isolated tornado
threat remains.  Copious moisture will be in place throughout the
atmospheric column resulting in storms being able to produce heavy
rainfall.  1-2 inches of rainfall will be possible with this
system.  Further details on the hydrologic side of things can be
found in the hydrology section of the AFD below.

Outside of thunderstorms, the gradient wind will pick up tonight
with sustained winds of 20-25 MPH and gusts up to 40 MPH. Thus, we
will be hoisting a Wind Advisory with this forecast package.

Showers and storms will end during the morning hours on Wednesday as
the cold front pushes on off to the east.  Gradient winds will
remain in place so winds will shift to the west and northwest and
remain at 20-25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH through the afternoon
hours.  Colder air will push into the region, although the latest
data is a bit slower with the drop in temperatures.  Highs on
Wednesday will occur during the early morning hours with readings in
the 60s, but temperatures will be falling into the upper 40s by
afternoon and into upper 30s to around 40 by evening.

.Long Term (Wednesday Night through Monday)...
Issued at 255 AM EST Tue Jan 29 2013

An active weather pattern will continue through the long term as a
few different systems will  move through the region. Wednesday night
some moisture on the back side of the low pressure system may wrap
around into the forecast area. This would result in light rain
showers quickly transitioning to light snow showers. With little
moisture, no snow accumulation is expected at this time.

Thursday looks to be dry but cool with clouds hanging around across
much of the region. Thursday night a clipper system will dive
through the northwesterly flow aloft. The models are having a hard
time getting a handle on how much moisture will be associated with
this system, but it should bring at least some light snow showers to
central Kentucky. The best chance for precip looks to be across
south central Kentucky and some light snow accumulations are not out
of the question. However, much uncertainty does remain with the
amount of moisture.

High pressure will build in on Friday. Despite clearing skies,
temperatures will only rise into the upper 20s to lower 30s. Another
clipper will dive through the flow bringing the next chance for
precipitation on Saturday. This will likely bring a mix of rain and
snow, transitioning to possibly all rain by Saturday afternoon,
though
temperatures at this time look marginal in the north.

Temperatures will moderate Sunday through Monday as winds shift to
southwesterly and begin to usher in warmer air ahead of the next
stronger cold front. This front will move through next Monday
night/Tuesday morning bringing yet another round of showers to the
forecast area.

.Aviation (06Z TAF Issuance)...
Issued at 1208 AM EST Tue Jan 29 2013

Generally a quiet night weather wise at the terminals during the
overnight hours.  Under a steady southwesterly winds cigs and
visibilities will remain VFR.  However, latest data suggests that
cigs will drop back to MVFR levels around 29/10-11Z at the terminals
and continue through the mid-morning hours.  We are expecting a
return to VFR conditions around 29/15Z or so with southwesterly
winds picking up quite a bit.  Much of the day on Tuesday will be
quite breezy with south to southwesterly winds of 15-20kts and gusts
in the 25-30kt range at times.

Next weather system is poised to affect the region toward the end of
the forecast period.  Latest deterministic and ensemble guidance
suggests a high probability of LLWS developing across the region.
Surface winds will continue to increase after 30/03Z with south
winds of 19-22kts and gusts up 30kts.  Winds around the 2kft AGL
level will quickly rise tomorrow night with winds generally out of
the southwest and picking up close to 60kts.  Thus, given the good
model agreement, will go ahead and insert the LLWS into the TAFs
with this forecast package.  Significant precipitation/convection
looks to remain just outside the forecast period and we'll address
those issues in the upcoming 29/12Z TAF package later this morning.

.Hydrology...
Issued at 300 AM EST Tue Jan 29 2013

No real changes in the forecast thinking on the hydrologic front.
An intense line of strong to severe thunderstorms is forecast to
move across the region late tonight and early Wednesday morning.  In
addition to the threat of damaging winds, these storms will likely
produce heavy rainfall.  Once the system pulls east on Wednesday
morning, a period of stratiform rainfall will likely persist for a
few hours.

Rainfall amounts averaging a little more than an inch in 6 hours
should be widespread. Isolated amounts of up to 2 inches are
possible. This rain could result in brief small stream flooding and
later rises on larger rivers. Any flooding that will occur should be
minor due to the fast nature of these storms. The rain will taper to
scattered showers Wednesday afternoon.

TO 800 AM EST WEDNESDAY. GIVEN THE RATHER STRONG WIND
FIELDS...THE MAIN THREAT FROM THE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE DAMAGING
WINDS. HOWEVER...AN ISOLATED TORNADO OR TWO CAN NOT BE RULED OUT.

DRAMATICALLY TUESDAY NIGHT AND EARLY WEDNESDAY. SOUTHWEST WINDS OF

THURSDAY. AN UPPER-LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL CROSS THE REGION

ACCUMULATIONS. ANOTHER QUICK-MOVING DISTURBANCE COULD BRING
