NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0140 AM CDT FRI MAY 11 2012
AREAS AFFECTED...S TX THROUGH THE UPPER TX COAST
CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 273...
VALID 110640Z - 110745Z
THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 273 CONTINUES.
SUMMARY...SEVERE WEATHER THREAT CONTINUES ACROSS WW 273...ESPECIALLY
FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND A TORNADO THREAT ACROSS DEEP S TX AND
SPREADING ACROSS THE UPPER TX COASTAL AREAS. COUNTIES INCLUDING THE
HOUSTON METRO AREA HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THIS TORNADO WATCH...PER
COORDINATION WITH WFO HOUSTON.
DISCUSSION...AT 0625Z...REGIONAL RADAR IMAGERY SHOWED TWO PRIMARY
FOCUS AREAS FOR A CONTINUED SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WITHIN WW 273.
THE FIRST AREA INCLUDES THE HOUSTON METRO AREA AS A BOWING LINE OF
STORMS EXTENDING FROM MATAGORDA TO BRAZORIA COUNTIES...AND THEN
ARCING SSEWD OFFSHORE. THIS LINE WAS MOVING NEWD AT 38 KT AND
SHOULD REACH GLS BY 07-0730Z. MEANWHILE...THE SECOND AREA OF
CONCERN WAS LOCATED OVER DEEP S TX...ALONG AND AHEAD OF A BAND OF
STRONG-SVR STORMS EXTENDING FROM BROOKS TO ERN STARR COUNTIES. THIS
ACTIVITY SHOULD REACH THE S TX COAST BETWEEN 08-10Z.
OBJECTIVE ANALYSES INDICATED THE ENVIRONMENT ACROSS THE UPPER TX
COASTAL AREA AND IN DEEP S TX EACH REMAINED MODERATELY UNSTABLE...
WITH MLCAPE VALUES OF 1000-1500 J/KG AND 2000-2500 J/KG...
RESPECTIVELY. THIS IN ADDITION TO BULK SHEAR OF 40-50 KT AND
EFFECTIVE SRH OF 200-300 M2/S2 ARE MORE THAN SUFFICIENT TO MAINTAIN
ONGOING STORM ORGANIZATION WITH ATTENDANT THREAT OF TORNADOES AND
DAMAGING WINDS.
