MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0742
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1100 AM CDT MON MAY 07 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL MS...W CNTRL AL

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 071600Z - 071730Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP AND SPREAD
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON. IT IS NOT
OUT OF THE QUESTION THAT ACTIVITY COULD STRENGTHEN ENOUGH TO REQUIRE
A SEVERE WEATHER WATCH...PARTICULARLY ACROSS WEST CENTRAL
MISSISSIPPI...WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS.

DISCUSSION...LARGE-SCALE FORCING FOR UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION APPEARS
NEGLIGIBLE WITHIN A LIGHT FLOW...VERY WEAKLY SHEARED REGIME ACROSS
THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. BUT LIFT ALONG A REMNANT OUTFLOW
ASSOCIATED WITH AN OVERNIGHT MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEM IS
MAINTAINING FAIRLY VIGOROUS CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT AS IT ADVANCES
SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH NORTHWESTERN/NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI AROUND 25
KT. A MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER AHEAD OF THE LEADING EDGE OF THE OUTFLOW
IS BECOMING MODERATELY UNSTABLE...WITH INSOLATION CONTRIBUTING TO
MIXED LAYER CAPE OF 1000 TO 2000 J/KG...ALONG AN AXIS ACROSS CENTRAL
MISSISSIPPI INTO WEST CENTRAL ALABAMA. THIS PROBABLY WILL SUPPORT
CONTINUING CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT...ALONG WITH A GRADUAL
INTENSIFICATION AND UPSCALE CONVECTIVE GROWTH THROUGH 18-19Z...WITH
STRONGEST STORMS LIKELY TO IMPACT AREAS NEAR AND WEST OF JACKSON.
MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL APPEARS THE GENERAL PRIMARY SEVERE
THREAT...AT LEAST INITIALLY...BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT COLD POOL
STRENGTHENING COULD EVENTUALLY BECOME SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT AN
INCREASING RISK FOR POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.
