AREAS AFFECTED...NERN MD / NRN DE / SERN PA / WRN NJ

CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

VALID 211207Z - 211500Z

AN INCREASE IN PRECIPITATION RATES /PRIMARILY FREEZING RAIN/ IS
EXPECTED TO OCCUR DURING THE 12-15Z PERIOD OVER PORTIONS OF THE
UPPER CHESAPEAKE BAY AND LOWER DE RIVER VALLEY REGION. FREEZING
RAIN WILL BE THE PRIMARY P-TYPE INVOF THE BALTIMORE METRO WITH A
CHANGEOVER FROM SNOW TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN FARTHER NE NEAR AND
N OF THE GREATER PHILADELPHIA AREA.

RECENT SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS THE 32 DEG F ISOTHERM EXTENDING IN A
SW-NE ORIENTATION FROM NEAR THE MOUTH OF THE POTOMAC NEWD IN A WAVY
FASHION INTO SRN NJ. SURFACE OBS THE PAST 3 HRS SHOW TEMPS WARMING
1-2 DEG F OVER THE MCD AREA. A CONCENTRATED ZONE OF PRESSURE FALLS
IS EVIDENT OFF THE NJ/DE COAST WHERE AN ELY FETCH FROM THE
RELATIVELY WARMER SHELF WATERS HAS LED TO A 5-10 DEG WARMING THE
PAST FEW HRS NEAR THE IMMEDIATE MD/DE/NJ COAST. RADAR MOSAIC SHOWS
A DISJOINTED PRECIP PLUME BEGINNING TO SPREAD EWD E OF THE FALL LINE
AND THIS WILL OVERSPREAD THE REGION THE NEXT FEW HOURS.

LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE SHOWS THE TERMINUS OF A 50 KT LLJ SHIFTING NE
AND AWAY FROM THE REGION --IN CONJUNCTION WITH A DEVELOPING SURFACE
LOW OFF THE NJ COAST-- BETWEEN 12Z-18Z AS AN ELONGATED SHORTWAVE
TROUGH APPROACHES FROM THE W. AS THIS OCCURS...AN INCREASINGLY
MOIST AIRMASS /CHARACTERIZED BY PW NEAR 0.75 INCH/ ATOP A
SUBFREEZING LAYER...AND INCREASING LARGE SCALE LIFT WILL FAVOR
PRECIPITATION RATES 0.05-0.10 INCH/3 HRS. FORECAST SOUNDINGS NEAR
THE PHILADELPHIA METRO SHOW A GRADUAL TRANSITION IN P-TYPE FROM SNOW
TO A MIX OF SLEET/FREEZING RAIN BY MID MORNING. FARTHER S NEAR
BALTIMORE...A MORE PRONOUNCED WARM NOSE WILL FAVOR PRIMARILY
FREEZING RAIN.
