MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1692
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0333 PM CDT FRI AUG 03 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...CENTRAL AL AND CENTRAL MS

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 552...

VALID 032033Z - 032130Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 552
CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR ADDITIONAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT SHOULD
REMAIN CONFINED TO THE AL PORTION OF WW 552 INTO FAR ERN MS.
FARTHER WEST INTO CENTRAL MS...THE LACK OF LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE
APPEARS TO LIMITING DEEP MOIST CONVECTIVE FORMATION THUS FAR.
ISOLATED STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE IN CENTRAL
AL...THOUGH THIS WW MAY BE CANCELLED EARLY DUE TO THE LACK OF
GREATER STORM ORGANIZATION POTENTIAL.

DISCUSSION...THE ENVIRONMENT ACROSS MUCH OF THE AL PORTION OF WW 552
HAS BEEN CONVECTIVELY OVERTURNED REDUCING THE CONTINUED THREAT FOR
SEVERE STORMS. THE EXCEPTION RESIDES ALONG THE SRN BOUNDARY OF THIS
WATCH IN SWRN AL WHERE STEEPER LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES COULD ENHANCE
LOCALIZED DOWNDRAFTS FOR STRONGER WIND GUSTS. 20-30 KT OF EFFECTIVE
BULK SHEAR AND MLCAPE OF 2500 J/KG SUGGEST MULTICELL STORM
DEVELOPMENT REMAINS POSSIBLE. HOWEVER...THIS OVERALL SEVERE WEATHER
THREAT IS SOMEWHAT LIMITED BY WEAK MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES WHICH WILL
TEND TO LIMIT THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROBUST...SUSTAINED UPDRAFTS.
