Davenport, (KDVN), launched 12:00Z, 6.1 hours before the alert went out and 13 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1900
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0106 PM CDT MON AUG 08 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...ERN IA...NRN IL

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 081806Z - 081930Z

WHILE SOME MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL/GUSTY WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN
STRONGER STORMS THIS AFTERNOON...THE NEED FOR A WW IS NOT CURRENTLY
ANTICIPATED. BUT TRENDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED FOR THE
POSSIBILITY OF AN INCREASING SEVERE THREAT.

VIGOROUS STORM DEVELOPMENT IS NOW WELL UNDERWAY NEAR A WEAK SURFACE
LOW LOCATED WEST OF CEDAR RAPIDS IOWA...AND NEAR A FRONTAL ZONE
EXTENDING EAST SOUTHEASTWARD INTO NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS. THE LOW
APPEARS ASSOCIATED WITH A DISTINCT LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC CYCLONIC
CIRCULATION CENTER...WITHIN A SHORT WAVE TROUGH WHICH IS EXPECTED TO
SHIFT EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BETWEEN NOW AND 20-22Z. IN THE
PRESENCE OF A MOIST ENVIRONMENT WITH MODERATELY LARGE CAPE /UP TO
2000 J PER KG/...LARGE-SCALE FORCING IS EXPECTED TO SUPPORT A
FURTHER INCREASE IN NUMBER/COVERAGE OF STORMS...WITH CONSOLIDATION
AND UPSCALE GROWTH INTO AN ORGANIZED STORM CLUSTER POSSIBLE ACROSS
NORTHERN ILLINOIS BY LATE AFTERNOON. LOW-LEVEL FLOW FIELDS ARE
FAIRLY WEAK...BUT 30-35 KT WESTERLY DEEP LAYER MEAN FLOW WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO STORM MOTION...AND PERHAPS THE RISK FOR STRONG GUSTY
WINDS THAT COULD AT LEAST APPROACH SEVERE LIMITS ON THE LEADING EDGE
OF AN ASSOCIATED DEVELOPING SURFACE COLD POOL.
