.SYNOPSIS...
A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL ORGANIZE NEAR THE FOOTHILLS TODAY AND MOVE
EAST ONTO THE PLAINS BRINGING A MIXTURE OF WEATHER FROM A CHANCE
OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING TO
STRONG WINDS THURSDAY.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
SEVERAL FORECAST CHALLENGES EXIST IN THE NEAR TERM. MODELS ARE
SIMILAR IN THE PATH TAKEN BY THE STORM SYSTEM OVER THE NEXT 24
HOURS BUT VARY IN SEVERAL AREAS THAT CREATE POTENTIAL SPREADS FOR
TEMPERATURES...CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION. THE GFS WOULD KEEP ALL
PRECIP LIQUID WHILE NAM DRAWS COLDER AIR SOUTH COMBINED WITH
DYNAMIC COOLING THAT COULD GENERATE A MIXTURE OF RAIN AND SNOW IN
THE NORTHWEST ZONES. GIVEN SPREAD...I USED A BLEND OF THE MODELS
THAT REGARDLESS LEADS TO BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES BEYOND TODAY.

THIS MORNING THE UPPER RIDGE BUILDS EAST BY NOONTIME CDT. SOUTH
WINDS WILL DRAW MOISTURE AND WARMER AIR NORTH AS THE DRYLINE SETS
UP ON THE HIGH PLAINS. BY LATE AFTERNOON THE H25 JETSTREAM AXIS
CROSSES THE 4 CORNERS REGION THAT WILL LEAD TO LEE CYCLOGENESIS
NEAR THE TRI STATE AREA. SURFACE HEATING WILL HELP IN THE
DESTABILIZATION PROCESS FURTHER SOUTHWEST WITH STORMS TO LIFT
NORTHWARD AS THE SURFACE LOW MOVES EAST THEN NORTHEAST. THE LOW LEVEL JET
STRENGTHENS AT 40 TO 60 KNOTS WHERE THE GREATEST INSTABILITY
ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST WILL SEE INITIAL STORM DEVELOPMENT THEN AS THE
SYSTEM LIFTS NORTHEAST OVERNIGHT THE CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS
NORTH AND EAST. THE GREATEST THREAT IS LARGE HAIL. BY MIDNIGHT THE
SEVERE THREAT ENDS BUT CONCERN HITS AS THE TROWEL DEVELOPS WITH
INCREASED LIFT ACROSS THE FAR NORTHWEST FROM 09Z TO 15Z THURSDAY.
BUFKIT SOUNDING SHOWS POTENTIAL FOR ALL PRECIPITATION IN
SHERIDAN...NORTHERN GARDEN AND POSSIBLY NORTHWEST CHERRY COUNTY
AS SNOW AS GOOD DIVERGENCE ALOFT MAY VARY WELL COOL THE AIR COLUMN
TO TRANSITION THE RAIN TO ALL SNOW. FOR NOW A MIXTURE OF RAIN AND
SNOW IS INCLUDED BUT WILL NEED TO BE RE/EVALUATED TODAY FOR
IMPACTS. THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS TOO WARM FOR ACCUMULATIONS SO
LIMITED IMPACT FOR NOW SEEN. THE NAM IS MUCH MORE PROGRESSIVE IN
BRINGING DRIER AIR INTO THE SYSTEM WHERE SOME CLEARING MAY BE
SEEN AS THE COLD FRONT PUSHES EAST AFTER MIDNIGHT. HIGHEST POPS
MAINTAINED ACROSS THE NORTH WERE BETTER FORCING AND INCREASING
ISENTROPIC LIFT OCCURS.

THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY THE SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE TO LIFT NORTHEAST.
PROBLEM AREA WILL BE THE WINDS AND HOW STRONG THEY WILL BE. WEST
OF HIGHWAY 83 A HIGH WIND WATCH WILL BE ISSUED FROM 15Z TO 03Z
THAT EVENING WHERE WINDS MAY LIKELY REACH 30 TO 40 KNOTS THEN
AREAS EAST A WIND ADVISORY WILL ALSO BE NEEDED. THE SYSTEM
OCCLUDES DURING THIS PERIOD WHERE THE CHANCE FOR SHOWERS CONTINUES
MAINLY ACROSS THE NORTH UNTIL FRIDAY AS THE UPPER LOW MOVES
SOUTHEAST SLOWLY FOR LINGERING CLOUDS AND CHANCE FOR SHOWERS TO
DECREASE FROM THE NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST.

SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY WE GET A BREAK BEFORE THE NEXT SYSTEM
DROPS THROUGH THE NORTHWEST AND TO THE PLAINS MONDAY MORNING.
MODELS ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH THE FRONT TO PUSH SOUTHEAST MONDAY
WITH FEW CHANGES MADE.

&&

.AVIATION...

VFR CONDITIONS THROUGH 22Z-23Z.

ISOLATED TO SCATTERED CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY SHOULD COMMENCE ACROSS THE
WRN HIGH PLAINS...ALONG AND WEST OF HIGHWAY 61 BETWEEN 00Z AND 03Z.
SIMILAR ACTIVITY MAY DEVELOP ELSEWHERE ACROSS SWRN NEB AROUND 00Z.
THE STORMS WHICH COULD BE SEVERE WILL LIFT RAPIDLY NORTHEAST AT 30
TO 40 MPH.

WITH THE PASSAGE OF A PACIFIC COLD FRONT THIS EVENING...CURRENTLY
NEAR THE UT-CO ID-WY BORDERS...STRATUS SHOULD DEVELOP ACROSS WRN NEB
AROUND 03Z. THE FRONT AND CIGS NEAR OVC015 WILL PROGRESS SLOWLY
EASTWARD OVERNIGHT. THUS VFR CONDITIONS AFTER 00Z TONIGHT ARE
EXPECTED TO DETERIORATE TO AREAS OF MVFR AND LOCALLY IFR IN
THUNDERSTORMS WHICH COULD CONTINUE AFTER 06Z TONIGHT.
