MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2425
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0526 AM CST TUE DEC 09 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL/LOWER MI

CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

VALID 091126Z - 091430Z

PRECIPITATION RATES WILL INCREASE ACROSS MI OVER THE NEXT FEW
HOURS...WITH A NARROW BAND OF FREEZING RAIN LIKELY ACROSS
CNTRL/LOWER MI. HERE RATES WILL BE NEAR 0.05 INCHES PER
HOUR...BEFORE TAPERING OFF TOWARDS 18Z.

RELATIVE LULL IN WINTER ACTIVITY WILL BE SHORT LIVED ACROSS MI AS
THE NEXT BATCH OF MOISTURE QUICKLY MOVES NEWD. TRAJECTORY OF MORE
SIGNIFICANT MOISTURE ACROSS NRN IL AND NERN MO WILL BRING IT TO
CNTRL/LOWER MI OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. ALTHOUGH THE WARM FRONT HAS
LIFTED NWD SLIGHTLY OVER THE PAST FOUR HOURS AND NOW RESIDES FROM
ABOUT A CHICAGO TO APPROXIMATELY DETROIT LINE...THE NWD MOVEMENT
WILL BE HALTED AS AN APPROACHING SHORT WAVE IN CNTRL MO AND ANOTHER
IN MN/NRN IA REINFORCE THE COLD AIR ACROSS NRN MI AND PROVIDE WEAK
LOW LEVEL FRONTOGENESIS. PROFILER DATA ALSO SHOWS A JET AXIS MOVING
NEWD WITH THE MO SHORT WAVE...WHICH WILL PLACE MI IN A FAVORABLE
REGION OF THE JET JUST AS THE GREATER MOISTURE BEGINS TO ENTER THE
AREA...ENHANCING ACTIVITY AT THE SURFACE. EXPECT THAT THE FREEZING
RAIN BAND WILL BE RELATIVELY NARROW GIVEN ABOVE FREEZING
TEMPERATURES IN SRN MI AND SUBFREEZING TEMPERATURES IN N.
HOWEVER...THIS NARROW BAND WILL LIKELY EXPERIENCE RATES NEAR OR
GREATER THAN 0.05 INCH PER HOUR. IN COLDER AREAS TO THE N...BRIEF
HEAVY SNOWFALL MAY BE POSSIBLE JUST TO THE N/COOL SIDE OF THE
FREEZING RAIN LINE.
