The nearest sounding before it

N. Platte/Lee Bi, NE (KLBF), launched 12:00Z, 8.1 hours before the alert went out and 37 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0565
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0305 PM CDT WED MAY 05 2004

AREAS AFFECTED...NWRN KS/CENTRAL AND SWRN NEB/SCENTRAL SD

CONCERNING...CONVECTIVE TRENDS

VALID 052005Z - 052200Z

STRONG HEATING HAS CREATED VERY STEEP LAPSE RATES 9-9.5 C/KM IN THE
HIGH PLAINS OF WRN NEB/ERN CO. SURFACE TROUGH/DRY LINE LOCATED FROM
NEAR GLD NEWD TO E OF VTN SEPARATES THE QUITE DRY AIR MASS TO THE W
FROM MARGINALLY MOIST AND DEEPLY MIXED AIR FROM S CENTRAL SD TO NWRN
KS.

THE HIGH BASED CONVECTION THAT HAS DEVELOPED W OF DRY LINE FROM NWRN
CORNER KS NWD INTO NEB PANHANDLE EXPECTED TO MOVE EWD ACROSS THE
DRY LINE REMAINDER OF AFTERNOON. SUFFICIENT MUCAPE...1000-1500
J/KG...E OF DRY LINE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THUNDERSTORMS TO
INTENSIFY EWD ACROSS CENTRAL NEB. THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE WILL BE
ISOLATED WITH THE LACK OF STRONG SHEAR AND LITTLE UPPER SUPPORT.
HOWEVER THE VERY STEEP LAPSE RATES AND HIGH BASES SUGGEST DAMAGING
MICRO BURSTS ARE LIKELY WITH THE MOST INTENSE STORMS.
