The nearest sounding before it

Midland Regional, TX (KMAF), launched 12:00Z, 9.5 hours before the alert went out and 209 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

AREAS AFFECTED...WRN/NWRN TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL

VALID 242132Z - 242300Z

THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING ACROSS WRN/NWRN TX
ALONG AN EWD MOVING DRY LINE...WITH THE GREATEST THREAT FOR ISOLATED
SEVERE STORMS IN AN AREA 30-40 MILES EITHER SIDE OF A LINE FROM
BGS-CDS. ISOLATED NATURE OF ACTIVITY SHOULD PRECLUDE THE NEED FOR A
WW.

21Z SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A DRY LINE OVER THE TX PANHANDLE /TO THE
EAST OF AMA/ AND SWD TO 40 N BGS TO NEAR INK. AIR MASS EAST OF THIS
BOUNDARY HAS BECOME MODERATELY UNSTABLE...WHERE SURFACE HEATING IS
OCCURRING WITHIN A MOIST AXIS BENEATH STEEP LAPSE RATES. WIND
PROFILER DATA OVER WCENTRAL TX SHOWS DEEP LAYER SHEAR SUPPORTIVE OF
MULTI-CELLS. THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP ALONG THE DRY
LINE...BUT THE MODEST SHEAR VALUES SHOULD LIMIT SUSTAINED UPDRAFT
STRENGTH DESPITE THE MODERATE INSTABILITY. THEREFORE...THE
STRONGEST STORMS SHOULD REMAIN ISOLATED WITH A THREAT FOR LARGE
HAIL...GIVEN THE DEGREE OF INSTABILITY AND LOW WET-BULB ZERO
HEIGHTS...AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.
