The nearest sounding before it

Lincoln, IL (KILX), launched 12:00Z, 11.7 hours before the alert went out and 82 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0032
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0541 PM CST TUE JAN 28 2003

AREAS AFFECTED...FAR SERN IA...FAR NERN MO...N-CENTRAL IL...AND
NRN IND

CONCERNING...PRECIPITATION TRENDS...WINTER PRECIPITATION

VALID 282341Z - 290445Z

A NARROW ZONE OF BANDED PRECIPITATION EXTENDING FROM THE MO/IA
BORDER ENEWD ACROSS N-CENTRAL IL AND NRN IND WILL BE ASSOCIATED
WITH BRIEF PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOWFALL THROUGH THIS EVENING AND
INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. THE BAND IS EXPECTED TO TRANSLATE
SLOWLY ESEWD THROUGH 29/06Z.

AT 28/23Z...A SURFACE COLD FRONT EXTENDS FROM NRN OK NEWD TO STL
TO NWRN IND. PRECIPITATION IS FOCUSED NORTH OF THE SURFACE
BOUNDARY...WITHIN 700MB CONFLUENT FLOW REGION IN ADVANCE OF
POSITIVELY TILTED SHORTWAVE TROUGH ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS. THE
CONFLUENT FLOW WILL CONTINUE TO ENHANCE HORIZONTAL TEMPERATURE
GRADIENT RESULTING IN A NARROW FRONTOGENETICALLY FORCED REGION OF
PRECIPITATION ACROSS THE DISCUSSION AREA. ETA FORECAST SOUNDINGS
ACROSS CENTRAL IL THIS EVENING INDICATE SATURATED LAYER EXTENDING
UP THROUGH FAVORABLE DENDRITE GROWTH LAYER /-12 TO -16C/ WHICH
MAY FURTHER ENHANCE PRECIPITATION EFFICIENCY WITHIN THE AXIS OF
MESOSCALE ASCENT.

FRONTAL ZONE CONTINUES TO GRADUALLY MOVE SEWD...WHICH SHOULD
RESULT IN PRECIPITATION BANDS EXHIBITING A SEWD COMPONENT OF
MOTION ACROSS NERN MO AND N-CENTRAL IL DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL
HOURS. THE BAND WILL LIKELY EXTEND EWD INTO NRN IND THIS EVENING.
HEAVY SNOW LASTING FOR UP TO 1-3 HOURS IS LIKELY AS STRONGEST UVV
ASSOCIATED WITH FRONTOGENETIC FORCING TRACKS ESEWD ACROSS THE
DISCUSSION AREA.
