The nearest sounding before it

Aberdeen, SD (KABR), launched 12:00Z, 8.2 hours before the alert went out and 228 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2242
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0309 PM CDT SUN AUG 24 2003

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN SD...NERN NEB...SWRN MN...NWRN IA

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL

VALID 242009Z - 242245Z

TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS PARTS OF THE MO RIVER VALLEY
AND SWRN MN OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THIS AREA WILL CONTINUE TO BE
MONITORED CLOSELY AND A SEVERE TSTM WATCH IS POSSIBLE LATER TODAY.

LATEST SURFACE ANALYSIS DEPICTED RELATIVELY WEAK BUT LOCALLY
ENHANCED FRONTAL ZONE FROM SCNTRL MN WSWWD ACROSS SERN SD...TO A
THERMAL LOW OVER NERN NEB. ELEVATED CONVECTION AND CLOUDS ACROSS
PORTIONS OF ERN SD...TO THE NORTH OF THE FRONT...HAVE ENHANCED THE
THERMAL GRADIENT FROM THIS AREA SOUTH INTO NERN NEB/NWRN IA AND SWRN
MN WHERE TEMPS HAVE NOW TOPPED 100F. A FAIRLY STOUT CAPPING
INVERSION HAS SO FAR INHIBITED MORE WIDESPREAD CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THESE AREAS. HOWEVER...IT APPEARS THAT ANOTHER
HOUR OR TWO OF HEATING AND DEEP MIXING AHEAD OF THE FRONT SHOULD BE
SUFFICIENT TO AT LEAST LOCALLY OVERCOME THE CAP AND ALLOW ISOLATED
SURFACE-BASED TSTM DEVELOPMENT TO OCCUR. DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL BE
SOMEWHAT MARGINAL FOR ORGANIZED STORMS EXCEPT IN A NARROW CORRIDOR
NEAR AND NORTH OF THE FRONTAL ZONE WHERE DEEPER WEAK NLY LOW LEVEL
FLOW WILL BE TOPPED BY 25-35KT MID LEVEL FLOW. A FEW CELLS COULD
PRODUCE HAIL AND HIGH WINDS IN THIS ENVIRONMENT...AIDED BY STEEP
LAPSE RATES AND MODERATE INSTABILITY. CONDITIONS ACROSS THIS REGION
WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED FOR A POSSIBLE SEVERE TSTM WATCH.
