NORTHERN GREAT BASIN FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV 230 PM PDT FRI MAY 25 2001 UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE AHEAD OF LOW OFF THE WEST COAST HAS RESULTED IN INCREASED CLOUD DEVELOPMENT WITH MID LEVEL MOISTURE COMING OVER THE SIERRA TODAY. THIS SHOULD HELP TO LIMIT HEATING SOMEWHAT ACROSS THE FAR WEST TODAY. CONVECTION HAS DEVELOPED IN THETA-E RIDGE AND BETTER LOW LEVEL HEATING/CONVERGENCE ACROSS THE EASTERN AND SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE CWA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. THIS ACTIVITY ALSO APPEARS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A WEAK THERMAL TROF OVER THE REGION. NEW MODELS HAVE SLOWED SLIGHTLY FROM PREVIOUS RUNS BUT CONTINUE TO DIG WEST COAST LOW THROUGH THE NEXT 24 HOURS BEFORE BEGINNING TO EJECT EAST NORTHEAST AS AN OPEN WAVE SUNDAY. WITH NO SIGNIFICANT DISAGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE MODELS TODAY AM INCLINED TO LEAN MORE TOWARD AVN AS IT HAS HANDLED SITUATION SLIGHTLY BETTER THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS. SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT SATURDAY SHOULD HELP TO DRY MID LEVELS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE REGION AND LIMIT CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT THERE. BETTER CHANCES AT CONVECTION LIE IN THE NORTHEAST AND EAST SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. AS SHORT WAVE MOVES ACROSS THE NORTH SUNDAY WILL LOOK FOR COOLER TEMPERATURES.
