NORTHERN ARIZONA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ
230 PM MST SAT JUN 23 2001

SYNOPSIS...HIGH PRESSURE WILL GRADUALLY MOVE EASTWARD THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS WITH A MOIST SOUTHERLY FLOW DEVELOPING ACROSS NORTHERN
ARIZONA. AS A RESULT...AFTERNOON AND EVENING SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM
ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE INTO TUESDAY...ESPECIALLY OVER THE MOGOLLON
RIM AND WHITE MOUNTAINS. SOME DRYING WILL TAKE PLACE LATER IN THE
WEEK BUT THE THREAT OF THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE OVER THE HIGHER
TERRAIN. TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN NEAR SEASONAL LEVELS.

DISCUSSION...MID LEVEL RIDGE AXIS LOCATED ALONG THE ARIZONA/NEW
MEXICO BORDER THIS AFTERNOON. A TROUGH IN THE WESTERLIES APPROACHING
THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST WILL PUSH THE RIDGE AXIS EASTWARD ACROSS
NEW MEXICO OVER THE NEXT TWO DAYS. HOWEVER...THE LOW TO MID LEVEL
FLOW BETWEEN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TROUGH AND THE NEW MEXICO RIDGE
WILL MAINLY BE SOUTHERLY WITH VERY LITTLE WESTERLY COMPONENT THROUGH
MONDAY. AS A RESULT...THE AIR MASS WILL REMAIN MOIST. PRECIPITABLE
WATER VALUES SOUTH OF THE MOGOLLON RIM WILL REMAIN OVER AN INCH WITH
VALUES OF 0.50 TO 0.75 INCHES NORTH OF THE MOGOLLON RIM. THIS WILL
ALSO KEEP US IN A REGIME THAT WILL CONTAIN DECENT VERTICAL SHEAR.
CONDITIONS LOOK FAVORABLE FOR ANOTHER CONVECTIVE BLOWUP LATE SUNDAY
OVER NORTHWEST MEXICO WHICH SHOULD PUSH ADDITIONAL MOISTURE INTO
ARIZONA. ALSO...A CYCLONIC UPPER DISTURBANCE WILL MOVE ACROSS
NORTHERN ARIZONA ON MONDAY BRINGING MUCH OF THIS ADDITIONAL MOISTURE
WITH IT. AS GRADIENTS STRENGTHEN AFTERNOON WINDS SHOULD BE A LITTLE
MORE PERSISTENT FROM THE SOUTHWEST AT 10 TO 20 MPH ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

OTHERWISE...MILD TEMPERATURES THE NEXT TWO DAYS WITH VARYING DEGREES
OF CLOUDINESS.

IN THE EXTENDED...PACIFIC NORTHWEST TROUGH BRINGS SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW
ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHERN ARIZONA WHICH USUALLY HAS A DRYING INFLUENCE.
THE MAIN UNCERTAINTY IS THAT THE MODELS ARE BECOMING LESS AGGRESSIVE
WITH THE TROUGH ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY WITH THE UPPER RIDGE
RETURNING TO A FAVORABLE POSITION BY FRIDAY. NOT COMPLETELY
CONVINCED THAT IT WILL DRY OUT OVER NORTHERN ARIZONA SO HAVE
CONTINUED WITH A CHANCE OF AFTERNOON AND EVENING SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THE EXTENDED.
