TEXAS/OKLAHOMA PANHANDLES FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AMARILLO TX 220 PM CDT TUE JUN 12 2001 SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED A DRYLINE IN PLACE ACROSS THE CENTRAL PANHANDLES WITH A DECENT SURFACE LOW ACROSS THE OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE. AN INSTABILITY AXIS WAS PRESENT ACROSS THE FAR EASTERN ZONES. AN APPROACHING SHORTWAVE MAY HELP GET ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS GOING ACROSS THE FAR EASTERN ZONES EARLY THIS EVENING. HOWEVER...THE WARM TEMPERATURES ALOFT WILL PROBABLY CAUSE THE STORMS TO DISSIPATE DURING THE MID TO LATE EVENING HOURS. WEDNESDAY...A SURFACE LOW RAPIDLY DEVELOPS ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS WHICH MAY RESULT IN WIND ADVISORY CONDITIONS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. THE DRYLINE SHOULD PUSH INTO WESTERN OKLAHOMA BY LATE AFTERNOON DECREASING THE CHANCE FOR STORMS WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT. NORTH TO NORTHWESTERLY FLOW BEHIND THE COLD FRONT WILL ALSO LIMIT MOISTURE POOLING ALONG THE FRONT WHICH WILL FURTHER DIMINISH THE THREAT OF STORMS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. RELATIVELY COOL HIGH PRESSURE SETTLES IN THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT. FOR THE EXTENDED PERIOD...THE UPPER TROUGH PUSHES EAST AND RIDGING STARTS TO RETURN TO THE HIGH PLAINS OVER THE WEEKEND. AS A RESULT... TEMPERATURES SHOULD REALLY HEAT UP. VERY LITTLE SHORTWAVE ACTIVITY IS EVIDENT ON THE NEW AVN WITH THE MOISTURE PUSHED DOWN INTO CENTRAL TEXAS. A DRYLINE WILL CONTINUE TO SHARPEN ACROSS THE EASTERN TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA PANHANDLES THIS AFTERNOON. THE AIRMASS EAST OF THE DRYLINE WILL BECOME VERY UNSTABLE AS SURFACE TEMPERATURES RISE TO NEAR 100. ALTHOUGH A LAYER OF VERY WARM AIR REMAINS IN THE MID LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE...A DISTURBANCE MOVING OUT OF NEW MEXICO INTO THE AREA MAY PROVIDE ENOUGH LIFT TO ALLOW AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM TO DEVELOP NEAR THE DRYLINE.
