SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
955 AM MST WED AUG 30 2000

.SYNOPSIS...
THE AIRMASS OVER SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA WILL CONTINUE MOIST
AND UNSTABLE WITH A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TODAY THROUGH
THURSDAY EVENING. ENHANCING THE THREAT FOR STRONG THUNDERSTORMS THIS
AFTERNOON WILL BE A STRONG UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVING UP INTO THE
STATE FROM MEXICO THIS AFTERNOON. MEANWHILE...A PACIFIC LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM WILL MOVE INLAND AND BRING MUCH DRIER AIR FROM THE PACIFIC
OVER SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA BY THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

.DISCUSSION...
LOTS OF PARAMETERS SEEM TO BE COMING TOGETHER TODAY FOR A VERY ACTIVE
CONVECTIVE DAY FOR MUCH OF CWFA. FIRST OFF...SOUNDINGS TODAY AT BOTH
TUS AND PSR SHOWING GOOD SHEAR AND DRY PUNCH IN THE MID LEVELS...
INDICATIVE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF LONG-LIVED MULTICELLS WITH WET
MICROBURST POTENTIAL .AND...LARGE HAIL IS ALSO A POSSIBILITY AS
AFTERNON CAPES APPROACH 2000 J/KG AND WBZ HEIGHTS NOT ALL THAT HIGH.
SERVING AS A TRIGGERING MECHANISM WILL BE THE UNSEASONABLY STRONG
VORT MAX APPROACHING SRN BORDER BETWEEN OLS AND DUG BEST SEEN ON WV
IMAGERY. IF SYSTEM CONTINUES ITS PRESENT MOVEMENT...BEST DYNAMICS
WOULD BE OVER ERN CWFA AND TUS AREA. HOWEVER...DIFFLUENCE ALOFT OVER
JUST ABOUT ALL OF SW/SCNTRL AZ WILL PROBABLY LEAD TO VERY TALL...
POSSIBLY SEVERE CONVECTION. CONVECTIVE TEMPS ONLY IN THE MID TO UPPER
80S WILL ALSO MEAN EARLIER THAN NORMAL CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT. SPC
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY LOOKS GOOD AND MAY DEFINITELY NEED A SVR WATCH BY
LATE MORNING/ERLY AFTERNOON. 12Z MODELS MOVE THE ABOVE MENTIONED VORT
MAX NEWD OUT OF PICTURE BY THIS EVENING...BUT MOISTURE REMAINS IN
LOWER LEVELS THROUGH THURSDAY AND EVEN INTO FRI. MAY BE SOME WEAK
DYNAMICS TOMORROW...SO CANT RULE OUT ISOLD THUNDERSTORMS BY THEN.
HOWEVER...IF TODAY IS REAL ACTIVE...IT MAY BE TOO STABLE FOR GOOD
WIDESPREAD CONVECTION TO GET GOING. CURRENT FORECASTS HAVE A GOOD
HANDLE ON THE ABOVE...THOUGH WILL PROBABLY UPDATE TO GO WITH AREAL
COVERAGE TERMS RATHER THAN CHANCE FOR SOME ZONES...AND MENTION
POSSIBILITY OF HAI$L AND STRONG WINDS...ESPECIALLY CNTRL/ERN PORTIONS
OF CWFA. DRYING FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND STILL ON TRACK. UPDATES OUT
SHORTLY...ALONG WITH A HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK. ESTLE
