SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
250 PM MST SUN AUG 13 2000

.SYNOPSIS...
HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL BE SITUATED OVER ARIZONA THIS WEEK...WITH
THE CENTER OF THE HIGH OVER THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES. THIS POSITION WILL
KEEP ARIZONA IN A MOIST EAST TO SOUTHEAST FLOW. THEREFORE...EXPECT
LATE AFTERNOON SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EACH DAY...ESPECIALLY OVER
THE HIGHER TERRAIN. LITTLE CHANGE IS EXPECTED IN THIS MOIST AND
UNSTABLE PATTERN THROUGHOUT THIS WEEK. MEANWHILE...SOUTHEAST
CALIFORNIA WILL BE RELATIVELY DRY THIS WEEK...WITH VERY LITTLE CHANCE
OF THUNDERSTORMS. TEMPERATURES WILL BE NEAR OR SLIGHT ABOVE SEASONAL
NORMALS.

.DISCUSSION...
LITTLE SPINNER SEEN NICELY ON VISIBLE IMAGERY HELPED TO TRIGGER
ISOLATED TALL CONVECTION OVER FAR WRN AZ THIS AFTERNOON. MOST OF THE
HEAVY RAIN FROM THIS CLUSTER HAS FALLEN IN OPEN DESERT AND SITUATION
WAS HANDLED BY A STRONGLY WORDED NOWCAST. ELSEWHERE...LITTLE IN THE
WAY OF DYNAMICS IS PRESENT THIS AFTERNOON OVER THE REMAINDER OF THE
AZ CWFA...SO STORMS ARE HAVING TO FORM OVER HIGHER TERRAIN. AND...
WITH A MINIMAL STEERING FLOW FROM THE EAST OR SOUTHEAST...IT WILL BE
TOUGH TO MOVE STORMS VERY FAR INTO THE DESERTS. STILL...AIRMASS IS
SOPPING WET AND VERY UNSTABLE...SO JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE IN AZ CWFA
COULD GET ISOLATED STORMS THIS EVENING. FEW CHANGES ARE EXPECTED TO
TAKE PLACE THE NEXT FEW DAYS WITH TERRAIN INDUCEMENT OF CONVECTION
THE MAIN TRIGGER. SINCE WRN AZ VORT MAX WILL BE OUT OF PICTURE BY
TOMORROW...WILL NOT MENTION CONVECTION W OF MARICOPA COUNTY BY
MONDAY. REST OF AZ CWFA WILL BE HANDLED WITH SLIGHT CHANCES.
UNFAVORABLE STEERING FLOW WILL CONTINUE INTO EXTENDED...SO WILL KEEP
THUNDERSTORM CHANCES GOING FROM ERN LAPAZ AND YUMA COUNTIES EWD...
CONTINUED DRY SE CA PORTION OF CWFA. ESTLE
