SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
245 PM MST WED AUG 9 2000

.SYNOPSIS...
HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT CENTERED OVER THE CENTRAL ROCKIES...WILL MAINTAIN
MONSOON MOISTURE OVER MAINLY CENTRAL AND EASTERN ARIZONA. THIS WILL
KEEP A CHANCE OF SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS OVER SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA
THROUGH THE WEEKEND...MAINLY HIGHER TERRAIN. SOUTHWEST ARIZONA WILL
HAVE A SLIGHT CHANCE OF STORMS...WITH MOSTLY CLEAR TO PARTLY CLOUDY
CONDITIONS OVER SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA. THIS PATTERN IS NOT EXPECTED TO
CHANGE MUCH THE REST OF THE WEEK AND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. IN
ADDITION...TEMPERATURES WILL BE NEAR OR A BIT ABOVE NORMAL...WITH
BREEZY AFTERNOONS.

.DISCUSSION...
MORE STORM ACTIVITY THIS AFTERNOON THAN YESTERDAY...ESPECIALLY
SOUTHEAST ARIZONA. HOWEVER...ITS NOT EXACTLY GOING GANG BUSTERS SO
FAR. ALSO OUR CWA NOW ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE SHORT WAVE MOVING
THROUGH WESTERN ARIZONA. SOUTHEASTERLY STEERING FLOW WILL TEND TO
KEEP RIM/WHITE MOUNTAIN STORMS MOVING PARALLEL TO THAT HIGHER
TERRAIN. WILL NEED TO HAVE STRONG OUTFLOWS FROM SOUTHEAST ARIZONA
STORMS TO PRODUCE STORMS IN OUR CWA. ANTICIPATE MOSTLY ISOLATED STORM
ACTIVITY IN EASTERN CWA. ETA BRINGS DEVELOPS UVV AND UPPER LEVEL
DIVERGENCE FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING OVER SOUTHEAST ARIZONA. IT
ALSO BRINGS IN A VORT MAX INTO SOUTHEAST ARIZONA TONIGHT AND KEEPS
DEEP MOISTURE ALL THE WAY OVER TO RIVER. AVN NOT AS AGRESSIVE WITH
FORCING AND SHOWS DRYING AT 850 AND 700 WITH MORE OF A WESTERLY
COMPONENT TO THE FLOW. MEANWHILE...500 MB RIDGE EXPANDS INTO CENTRAL
PLAINS/MIDWEST WITH SOME SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW TRYING TO SNEAK IN AS
CUTOFF LOW COMES ASHORE AND SHEARS OUT. IN EXTENDED...WESTERN CWA
UNDER MORE OF A SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW AND EASTERN CWA MORE
SOUTHEASTERLY. OTHERWISE...STANDARD MONSOON SITUATION IN PLACE...THUS
FORECAST MADE ACCORDINGLY. JAMISON
