INTERIOR CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY - HANFORD CA 145 PM PDT TUE AUG 01 2000 GREAT BASIN HIGH CONTINUES TO DOMINATE THE WEATHER WITH THE RIDGE AXIS ORIENTED EAST/WEST ACROSS NORTHERN CALIFORNINA THROUGH CENTRAL NEVADA AND UTAH. AN EAST TO SOUTHEAST MID AND UPPER FLOW PREVAILS OVER THE FORECAST AREA. VORTICITY CENTER NEAR 53N 138W IS FORECAST TO MOVE SOUTHEAST AND FORM A TROUGH OFF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. AS THIS OCCURS, THE HIGH CENTER GETS PUSHED SOUTHEAST WHICH TURNS THE UPPER FLOW ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA SOUTHEAST TO SOUTH AND STARTS TO LOWER HEIGHTS. MAIN FORECAST CONCERN IS CONVECTION. MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY HAVE INCREASED ACROSS THE AREA THE PAST 24 HOURS. CONVECTION ALREADY FIRING OVER THE SIERRA NEVADA. MESOETA BRINGS A VORTICITY CENTER OVER THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE FORECAST AREA LATE TODAY AND TONIGHT ALONG WITH AN UPPER JET MAX. THESE ADDED DYNAMICS SHOULD ENHANCE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. THE EAST TO SOUTHEAST FLOW ALOFT WILL KEEP THE THREAT OF STORMS OVER THE FOOTHILLS AS WELL AS THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. 17Z EDW AND 12Z DRA RAOBS HAVE A VERY PRONOUNCED INVERTED V. ALTHOUGH PW VALUES ARE UP FROM YESTERDAY, THE POTENTIAL FOR A FEW DRY THUNDERSTORMS STILL EXISTS ALONG WITH GUSTY WINDS. MODEL RH CROSS SECTIONS CONTINUE TO SHOW BLOBS OF MOISTURE MOVING AROSS THE AREA THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. A DRYING TREND IS FORECAST FOR THURSDAY AND CONVECTIVE PARAMETERS BECOME LESS FAVORABLE. WILL KEEP CHANCE POPS IN THE SIERRA THROUGH THE PERIOD BUT TAPER BACK THURSDAY. DESERT AREA IS LACKING OROGRAPHIC ENHANCEMENT AND WITH THE EASTERLY FLOW FEEL CHANCE OF CONVECTION THERE WILL BE LIMITED TO SLIGHT TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. ANOTHER WARM NIGHT TONIGHT AND HOT DAY TOMORROW WITH 850 AND 700 MB TEMPERATURES FORECAST TO CHANGE LITTLE. SLIGHT COOLING FORECAST THURSDAY AS THE GREAT BASIN HIGH GETS NUDGED SOUTHEAST. EXTENDED MODELS FORECAST A TROUGH TO DEVELOP ALONG THE WEST COAST BY THE WEEKEND RESULTING IN LOWER HEIGHTS AND THICKNESSES OVER THE AREA.
