AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GOODLAND KS 230 PM MDT (330 PM CDT) THU AUG 5 1999 THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WAS OVER THE SOUTHERN PLAINS WITH A RIDGE EXTENDING INTO MONTANA. DEEP TROPICAL MOISTURE WAS CONTINUING TO SPREAD NORTH INTO THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS WITH 700 MB DEW POINTS BETWEEN +6C AND +8C OVER NEW MEXICO...SOUTHWEST KANSAS AND MUCH OF COLORADO. AN EMBEDDED SHORTWAVE WAS OVER THE FORECAST AREA AT 20Z AND WAS PRODUCING SHOWERS WITH LOCAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS EXCEEDING 2 INCHES. ANOTHER SHORTWAVE WAS OVER EAST NEW MEXICO. THE NGM...AVN AND ETA DID NOT INITIALIZE THIS FEATURE VERY WELL...AS MENTIONED BY THE PREVIOUS SHIFT. BELIEVE THE STRENGTH AND TRACK OF THIS DISTURBANCE WILL PROVIDE A VALUABLE KEY TO TONIGHTS PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS. LIGHTNING DATA COMPARISON INDICATES THIS SYSTEM IS WEAKER THAN THE ONE THAT MOVED THROUGH LAST NIGHT. ALSO...THE TRAJECTORY FOR THIS FEATURE IS FARTHER WEST GIVEN CURRENT (20Z) TRACK USING THE SATELLITE. THIS TRACK WOULD KEEP THE HEAVIEST RAIN OVER COLORADO. AT 20Z...A SURFACE LOW WAS OVER SOUTHEAST COLORADO WITH SOUTHEAST FLOW NORTHEAST OF THE LOW ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA. THIS SHOULD ENHANCE RAIN CHANCES TONIGHT. NONE OF THE MODELS HANDLES THE LOW VERY WELL. GIVEN THE UNCERTAINTY OF RAIN CHANCES AND AMOUNTS TONIGHT...WILL NOT ISSUE ANY HIGHLIGHTS. CALLS AROUND THE AREA INDICATED SOME PONDING OF WATER IN FIELDS OF SOUTHEAST YUMA COUNTY...BUT NO OTHER REPORTS WERE RECEIVED. THE NGM WAS TOO WARM TODAY AND BELIEVE WARMS TEMPERATURES TOO FAST NEXT FEW DAYS...SO WILL UNDERCUT MAXES. MINS LOOK GOOD. .GLD...NONE. SKIPPER
