MOVEMENT WAS TO THE SOUTH AT 20 MPH. @ SOME OF THESE STORMS MAY CONTAIN SMALL HAIL...GUSTY WINDS EXCEEDING 57 MPH...DEADLY LIGHTNING AND VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS OF RAIN. MOJAVE DESERT/SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV 245 PM PDT SAT JUL 18 1998 SYNOPSIS...A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE SOUTHWEST UNITED STATES WILL SLOWLY WEAKEN THROUGH THIS WEEKEND. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR A GRADUAL INCREASE IN MONSOONAL MOISTURE ACROSS THE MOJAVE DESERT AND SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN. OTHERWISE...HOT AND DRY WEATHER WILL CONTINUE. DISCUSSION...AN E-W ORIENTED UPPER RIDGE AXIS EXTENDED FROM CENTRAL CALIFORNIA EAST ACROSS CENTRAL NEVADA AND CENTRAL UTAH THIS AFTERNOON. ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAD RAPIDLY DEVELOPED THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS NORTHWEST ARIZONA...WHERE THE MOIST EASTERLY FLOW WAS ALREADY ESTABLISHED. THE AIRMASS OVER THE REMAINDER OF THE CWA WAS RELATIVELY DRY WITH JUST SOME SCT CU ACROSS THE AREA. 12Z PROGS SHOWED A GRADUAL WEAKENING AND SLIGHT EASTWARD OF THE UPPER RIDGE ACROSS THE WESTERN UNITED THROUGH MONDAY. WITH THE FLOW BECOMING MORE SOUTHEASTERLY THROUGH TIME...A GRADUAL INCREASE IN MID LEVEL MOISTURE CAN BE EXPECTED ACROSS MOST OF THE CWA. SHOULD SEE SOME AFTERNOON AND EVENING CONVECTION DEVELOPING A LITTLE FARTHER NORTH AND WEST ACROSS SOUTHERN NEVADA AND THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY DESERTS SUNDAY AND MONDAY. SHOULD BE FOCUSED MAINLY ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS WHERE BEST LIFT IS GENERATED. DAYTIME HIGHS WILL DECLINE A LITTLE THROUGH MONDAY WITH SLIGHTLY LOWER HEIGHTS AND ADDED CLOUD COVER.
