130 PM MDT (230 PM CDT) TUE AUG 11 1998

...MODEL INTERPRETATIONS OF TRANSITIONAL SUB-SYNOPTIC FLOW OVER
THIS CWA SEEMS A TYPICAL FORECAST DILEMNA ON MY SHIFTS...

BASED ON SFC OBS AT 18Z AND VIS SATL...YOU CAN PICK OUT THE
STATIONARY FRONT STRUNG OUT ALONG I-70 FROM HYS TO GLD AND THEN NNWD
TO SNY. TIMING SHORTWAVE ENERGY AND SUBSEQUENT POP CHCS HAS BEEN
LESS MODEL DRIVEN AND MORE NOWCASTING THRU FIRST 12 HOURS. IT LOOKS
AS IF NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
DIGGING SHORTWAVE AND ASSOCIATED TROUGH ON WV LOOP EXTENDING FROM
SRN NV...NEWD TO CYS AND INTO LOW OVER WRN SD IS GOING TO TRANSLATE
DOWN TO H7 LEVEL WITH SOMEWHAT MORE STRENGTH...STRONGER WNWLY FLOW
AND COOLER H7 AIR THAN THE MODELS SHOW BY 12/12Z OVER CWA. IT WILL
BE THE MAIN FOCUS FOR POPS AND IS PROBABLY TOO FAR SOUTH BY 36 HRS
THAN MODELS PREDICT. THE NGM IGNORES THIS SHORTWAVE AND FOCUSES MORE
ON THE ONE OVER SWRN OREGON AT H5 ANYWAY. AGREE THAT H7 THERMAL
TROUGH WILL BE DRAPED WEST TO EAST ACROSS CWA ON WEDNESDAY AND
THAT NEITHER MODEL IS CORRECT WITH DIFFUSE DEFORMATION ZONE
SAGGING VERY SLOWLY SWD ALONG AND JUST SOUTH OF I-70 AFT 06Z.
WHAT WILL BE MOST DIFFICULT FOR LATER SHIFTS TO MONITOR...IS TO
ALLOW THE TEMP GRADIENTS AND POPS TO DEVELOP FROM SW TO NE ACROSS
CWA IN THE AFTN WED. SINCE THIS IS A FORECAST AND DOES NOT
NECESSARILY MIRROR MODEL GUIDANCE...
I WOULD EXPECT SOME SUN IN SW ZONES WEDNESDAY AFTN WITH WEAK AND
BRIEF SFC LOW FORMATION ALONG STATIONARY FRONT DESCENDING SOUTH FROM
AKO TO TRB....ALLOWING FOR TCU AND SC WITH H7 THERMAL TROF STRUNG
OUT WEST TO EAST ALONG KS/OKLA BORDER WEDNESDAY EVENING...NOT ALONG
RED RIVER AS MODELS SUGGEST THIS RUN.

.GLD...FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES UNTIL 12/09Z FOR EXTREME EAST
       CENTRAL COLORADO...COZ090>092.
