SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR NORTH TEXAS
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
600 AM CDT THU OCT 23 1997

THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TO THE SOUTH OF A
TEMPLE...TO GROESBECK...TO CENTERVILLE LINE. THIS INCLUDES THE CITIES
OF CAMERON...FRANKLIN AND CENTERVILLE.

TO THE NORTH OF THE MODERATE RISK AREA...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK FOR
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS GENERALLY TO THE SOUTH OF A GOLDTHWAITE...TO
WEATHERFORD TO PARIS LINE. SOME CITIES IN THE SLIGHT RISK AREA
INCLUDE WACO...TEMPLE...CORSICANA...PALESTINE AND THE DALLAS/FORT
WORTH METROPLEX.

A STRONG UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE OUT OF NEW MEXICO THIS
MORNING INTO NORTH TEXAS BY THIS AFTERNOON. OUT AHEAD OF THIS
DISTURBANCE STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL PULL GULF MOISTURE NORTHWARD
ACROSS THE OUTLOOK AREA AS A WARM FRONTAL BOUNDARY MOVES NORTHWARD.
AS A RESULT WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP IN THE MOIST AND
UNSTABLE AIRMASS ACROSS MUCH OF NORTH TEXAS.

THE MAIN THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER WILL BE IN THE MODERATE RISK AREA
WHERE STRONG VERTICAL WIND SHEAR PROFILES WILL AID IN THE DEVELOPMENT
OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WHERE LARGE HAIL...DAMAGING WINDS AND
TORNADOES WILL ALL BE POSSIBLE.

FARTHER TO THE NORTH ACROSS THE SLIGHT RISK AREA THE VERTICAL WIND
PROFILE WILL NOT BE AS FAVORABLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TORNADOES.
HOWEVER LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN A FEW OF
THE STORMS.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN FORT WORTH WILL MONITOR THIS
SITUATION THROUGHOUT THE DAY FOR IMPORTANT CHANGES IN WIND SHEAR OR
INSTABILITY.

EMERGENCY MANAGERS AND STORM SPOTTER GROUPS WEST OF A DALLAS TO
CAMERON LINE MAY SEE LIMITED ACTIVATION BY LATE MORNING. WHILE TO THE
EAST OF THAT LINE SPOTTER ACTIVATION MAY NOT BE REQUIRED UNTIL
AFTERNOON.
