IN EAST CENTRAL NEW MEXICO ...SOUTHERN ROOSEVELT COUNTY AT 342 PM MDT...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WAS INDICATED BY DOPPLER RADAR 13 MILES SOUTHEAST OF KENNA AND 28 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF PORTALES MOVING EAST AT 17 MPH. SOME LOCATIONS IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM ARE...MILNESAND. WHEN THUNDERSTORMS ARE OCCURRING...PEOPLE SHOULD MOVE INSIDE A STRONG BUILDING. DO NOT STAND BY WINDOWS. NMZ001>021-026-282200- SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR NORTHERN TWO THIRDS OF NEW MEXICO 1030 AM MDT WED MAY 28 1997 THIS OUTLOOK PERTAINS TO THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES IN NEW MEXICO: BERNALILLO GUADALUPE RIO ARRIBA SOCORRO CATRON HARDING ROOSEVELT TAOS CHAVES LINCOLN SANDOVAL TORRANCE CIBOLA LOS ALAMOS SAN JUAN QUAY COLFAX MCKINLEY SAN MIGUEL UNION CURRY MORA SANTA FE VALENCIA DE BACA SYNOPSIS: THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS MUCH OF EASTERN NEW MEXICO THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. A SURFACE TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WILL REMAIN NEARLY STATIONARY ON THE NORTHEAST PLAINS THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. A MOIST SOUTHEAST WIND FLOW WILL PREVAIL TO THE SOUTH OF THIS FEATURE. A WEAK DISTURBANCE APPROACHING FROM THE CENTRAL ROCKIES AND AFTERNOON HEATING WILL CAUSE THE AIR MASS TO DESTABILIZE OVER THE OUTLOOK AREA WITH THUNDERSTORMS FIRST DEVELOPING ALONG THE EAST SLOPES OF THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS. THE NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WILL CREATE A FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AS THEY MOVE EAST OR SOUTHEAST ON THE PLAINS LATER TODAY. THE PRIMARY THREAT WILL BE LARGE HAIL BUT VERTICAL WIND PROFILES SUGGEST ISOLATED SUPERCELLS ARE POSSIBLE. SPOTTER ACTIVATION MAY BE REQUIRED LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. KJ
