NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RALEIGH/DURHAM NC
335 AM EDT SAT OCT 12 1996

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN RALEIGH/DURHAM HAS EXTENDED A
FLASH FLOOD WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 8 PM EDT SATURDAY FOR PEOPLE
IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION...

IN SOUTH CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA

   ...SOUTHWESTERN ANSON COUNTY

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT REPORTS THAT WATER CONTINUES TO LEAK AT THE WHITE
STORE DAM ON BELL CREEK. A DAM INSPECTOR HAS ESTIMATED THAT THE DAM WILL
FAIL IN 12 TO 36 HOURS WHICH WOULD BE LATE SATURDAY OR SUNDAY.

THIS EARTHEN DAM IS 20 FEET HIGH AND COVERS 28 ACRES. IT IMPOUNDS 175
ACRE/FEET OF WATER. OFFICIALS HAVE CLOSED A SECTION OF UNION CHURCH
ROAD IMMEDIATELY SOUTH OF THE DAM.

IF THE DAM BREAKS...IT WILL AFFECT ALL AREAS IN AND AROUND BELL
CREEK..BALE CREEK...SHAW CREEK AND RHODDY CREEK IN NORTH CAROLINA AND
POSSIBLY THOMPSON CREEK IN SOUTH CAROLINA. IT WILL AFFECT THE
COMMUNITIES OF LONG PINE AND LITTLE QUARTERS IN NORTH CAROLINA AND
POSSIBLY SEVERAL COMMUNITIES IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION! IF DAM FAILURE OCCURS HOUSES
AND VEHICLES DOWNSTREAM ARE LIKELY TO BE INUNDATED AND LIVES THREATENED
BY FLOOD WATERS...BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE AND SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY
AT THE REQUEST OF LOCAL OFFICIALS.

A FLASH FLOOD STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED LATER THIS MORNING WITH THE
LATEST AVAILABLE INFORMATION.
