AZZ015>026-091200- SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR THE SOUTHERN HALF OF ARIZONA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ 123 PM MST THU AUG 8 1996 ...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN SANTA CRUZ AND COCHISE COUNTIES THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING... SOUTHEAST WINDS BROUGHT AN INCREASE IN MOISTURE TO MUCH OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA DURING THE PAST 24 HOURS...ESPECIALLY THE SOUTHEAST PORTION. THE INCREASE WAS MOSTLY IN THE MIDDLE LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE FROM AROUND 13,000 FEET TO 21,000 FEET. COUPLED WITH SOME COOLING ALOFT ...THIS RESULTED IN MORE UNSTABLE AIR AND INCREASED THE POTENTIAL FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT. AT THE SAME TIME...RELATIVELY DRIER AIR IN THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE HAS CREATED A POTENTIAL FOR STRONG DOWNBURST WINDS WITH SOME STORMS. WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED OVER SOUTHERN ARIZONA... EXCEPT IN THE FAR SOUTHWEST...THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH DAMAGING WINDS...DOWNBURST WINDS IN EXCESS OF 58 MPH...OVER COCHISE AND SANTA CRUZ COUNTIES WITH SOME OF THESE STORMS. REMEMBER...THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE DEADLY LIGHTNING...AND MAY PRODUCE GUSTY WINDS ...BLOWING DUST AND BRIEF HEAVY RAIN. SOME OF THE HAZARDS TO MOTORISTS AND OTHERS WITH OUTDOOR INTERESTS INCLUDE LIGHTNING... REDUCED VISIBILITY AND THE RESULTS OF HEAVY RAIN.
