000 TTAA00 KSAT 081551 FFWSAT TXC123-177-255-082100- BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED FLASH FLOOD WARNING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO TX 1036 AM CDT SUN SEP 8 1996 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 4 PM CDT FOR PERSONS IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS... IN SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS ...DE WITT COUNTY...GONZALES COUNTY...KARNES COUNTY AT 1035 AM CDT...COOPERATIVE OBSERVERS REPORTED RAINFALL TOTALS IN EXCESS OF 5 INCHES OCCURRING BETWEEN WESTHOFF IN DEWITT COUNTY AND SMILEY IN GONZALES COUNTY. NEXRAD DOPPLER RAINFALL ESTIMATES ALSO INDICATE OVER 5 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN NEAR GILLETT IN KARNES COUNTY. WIDESPREAD LOW-LAND FLOODING WAS ALSO REPORTED BETWEEN WESTHOFF AND SMILEY. SANDIES CREEK NEAR WESTHOFF WAS ALSO OVER BANKS...AS WELL AS OTHER TRIBUTARIES NEARBY THAT FLOW INTO THE GUADALUPE. NUMEROUS COUNTY ROADS AND STATE HIGHWAYS WERE ALSO CLOSED DUE TO HIGH FLOOD WATERS. A WIDE AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EXTENDED FROM CRYSTAL CITY EASTWARD ACROSS SAN ANTONIO TO EL CAMPO. THE HEAVIEST STORMS WERE LOCATED ACROSS PORTIONS OF WILSON...KARNES...GONZALES AND DEWITT COUNTIES. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL ESTIMATES BETWEEN 1 AND 3 INCHES ARE OCCURRING IN THIS ACTIVITY...AND WILL CONTINUE INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS. A FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR IMMINENT. MOST FLASH FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS BRIDGES...OR LOW SPOTS IF WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. NEVER TRY TO CROSS A FLOWING STREAM...EVEN A SMALL ONE...ON FOOT TO ESCAPE RISING WATER DURING THREATENING RAINS.
