STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WERE DETECTED BY WEATHER RADAR MOVING SOUTH FROM THE MOGOLLON RIM TOWARD THE LOWER ELEVATION COMMUNITIES OF PAYSON... GLOBE-MIAMI...SAFFORD...AND LAKE ROOSEVELT. THE STRONGEST STORMS AT 425 PM WERE LOCATED JUST EAST OF STRAWBERRY...SOUTHEAST OF PAYSON...AND OVER THE FORT APACHE AND WHITE RIVER INDIAN RESERVATIONS. RAINFALL RATES DETECTED BY RADAR WERE ON THE ORDER OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR. AZZ007-150130- SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ 438 PM MST MON AUG 14 1995 ...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS OCCURING OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN ARIZONA DESERTS... AT 430 PM MST...PHOENIX DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A STRONG CLUSTER OF THUNDERSTORMS IN SOUTHERN MARICOPA COUNTY...AND ANOTHER CLUSTER OF THUNDERSTORMS IN NORTHERN YUMA AND SOUTHERN LA PAZ COUNTY. THE CLUSTER OF STORMS OVER SOUTHERN MARICOPA COUNTY WAS PRODUCING MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL AS IT MOVED VERY SLOWLY TO THE WEST. THE STRONGEST THUNDERSTORMS WERE LOCATED ABOUT 15 MILES SOUTH OF GILA BEND...EAST OF STATE ROUTE 85. THESE STORMS WERE PART OF A LARGE COMPLEX OF THUNDERSTORMS THAT EXTENDED SOUTHWARD INTO WESTERN PIMA COUNTY. ANOTHER CLUSTER OF STORMS WAS LOCATED ALONG THE YUMA AND LA PAZ COUNTY LINE...SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 10. THESE STORMS WERE PRODUCING MODERATE AMOUNTS OF RAINFALL AND WERE NEARLY STATIONARY. RADAR DERIVED RAINFALL ESTIMATES FROM THE STORMS ACROSS THE SOUTHWESTERN DESERTS INDICATE THAT AS MUCH AS 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN MAY HAVE FALLEN UNDER THE STRONGER STORMS. DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF THESE STORMS...MINOR LOCALIZED FLOODING IS POSSIBLE ALONG ROADWAYS AND IN NORMALLY DRY CREEK BEDS. STRONG GUSTY WINDS...BLOWING DUST...AND FREQUENT DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE ALSO POSSIBLE WITH THESE STORMS.
