SCZ001-002-004-270900 SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GREENVILLE SPARTANBURG SC 1240 AM EST SAT MAR 27 1993 ...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT OVERNIGHT AND SATURDAY FOR THE MOUNTAINS AND FOOTHILLS OF SOUTH CAROLINA... AT 1235 AM LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN WAS FALLING OVER THE EAST PORTION OF THE UPSTATE FROM GREENVILLE..SPARTANBURG..UNION..AND LAURENS COUNTIES. THE AREA OF RAIN EXTENDS INTO THE MIDLANDS OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND WAS MOVING NORTHWEST AROUND 25 MPH. THIS NORTHWESTWARD MOVMENT OF RAIN IS FAVORABLE FOR HEAVY RAIN TO DEVELOP AND PERSIST THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. THE REEDY RIVER IN GREENVILLE WAS AT 7.5 FEET AT 1225 AM AND FLOODING BEGINS TO OCCUR AROUND 8.0 FEET. WITH MORE RAINS HEADED FOR CENTRAL GREENVILLE COUNTY...IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE REEDY RIVER MAY RISE ABOVE 8.0 FEET EARLY THIS MORNING. WITH STREAMS ALREADY RUNNING ABOVE NORMAL ADDITIONAL RAINS OVERNIGHT AND SATURDAY WILL CAUSE FURHTER SWELLING OF AREA STREAMS. PEOPLE LIVING NEAR STREAMS AND RIVERS...ESPECIALLY THE REEDY RIVER... SHOULD CHECK PREPAREDNESS REQUIREMENTS. SHOULD HEAVY RAIN MOVE INTO YOUR AREA OR A WARNING IS ISSUED... BE READY TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION FOR SAFETY. LEFKOF/GSP
