THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DES MOINES HAS ISSUED A
FLASH FLOOD WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 1045 AM CST
FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION(S)...
 
IN CENTRAL IOWA
 
   ...SOUTHWESTERN POLK COUNTY
 
AN ICE JAM HAS FORMED ON THE RACCOON RIVER ABOVE THE 63RD STREET BRIDGE.
THE ICE JAM HAS RESULTED IN RAPID RISES IN THE RIVER LEVEL UPSTREAM OF
THE ICE JAM.
 
REPORTS FROM THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF AND THE WALNUT WOODS PARK RANGER
INDICATE THAT WATER HAS ALREADY OVERTOPPED SW 52ND AVE NEAR THE DES
MOINES SAND AND GRAVEL FACILITY.  WATER WAS REPORTED 12 TO 18 INCHES
DEEP AND FLOWING RAPIDLY OVER THE ROADWAY.
 
PEOPLE UPSTREAM OF THE 63RD STREET BRIDGE SHOULD BE ALERT TO THE
POTENTIAL OF FURTHER RISES IN THE RIVER LEVEL UPSTREAM.  THE RIVER COULD
FLUCTUATE 2 TO 3 FEET THROUGH THE MORNING.  PEOPLE DOWNSTREAM SHOULD ALS
BALERT TO THE POTENTIAL SUDDEN RIVER RISES SHOULD THE ICE JAM BREAK
SUDDENLY.
 
DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY.  THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO
CROSS SAFELY.  VE HICLES CAUGHT IN RISING WATER SHOULD BE
ABANDONED QUICKLY.  MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.
