COZ011-212130- SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DENVER CO 220 PM MDT WED JUL 21 1993 ...DOWNBURST TYPE WINDS TO OCCUR ALONG THE FRONT RANGE... A FEW THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP IN AND ALONG THE FRONT RANGE OF COLORADO THIS AFTERNOON. SINCE THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE ARE RATHER DRY...LITTLE RAINFALL IS EXPECTED WITH THESE STORMS AS IT WILL EVAPORATE BEFORE REACHING THE GROUND. HOWEVER WHEN THE RAIN EVAPORATES...THE AIR MOVING DOWN IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE RAIN DOESN'T STOP SO IT CAUSES A WEATHER PHENEMENA THAT ARE CALLED DOWNBURSTS. THE MAIN THREAT FROM THE STORMS ALONG THE FRONT RANGE THIS AFTERNOON WILL BE THE STRONG DOWNBURST TYPE WINDS. WINDS COULD GUSTS AS HIGH AS 50 TO 60 MPH THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON WHEN CLOSE TO A THUNDERSTORM. IF YOU LIVE ALONG THE FRONT RANGE OR IN THE FOOTHILLS...BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL OF STRONG WINDS AND MOVE ANY LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS INDOORS. CONTINUE TO MONITOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO...COMMERCIAL RADIO...AND/OR TELEVISION FOR FURTHER UPDATES ON THE DOWNBURST POTENTIAL. HEITKAMP
