SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RICHMOND VA
 1035 AM EDT FRI AUG 6 1993

 ...LARGE AREA OF RAIN...SOME HEAVY...APPROACHING THE RICHMOND AREA...

AT 1025 AM EDT...WEATHER SERVICE RADAR SHOWED A LARGE AREA OF RAIN OVER
MOST OF VIRGINIA. THERE WAS A LARGE BREAK IN THE RAIN OVER AREAS SOUTH
AND EAST OF RICHMOND. THE RAIN WAS MOVING TO THE EAST AT 20 MPH.

THE HEAVIEST RAIN HAS BEEN FALLING BETWEEN RICHMOND AND THE CHARLOTTESVILLE
AND LYNCHBURG AREAS. RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN THIS REGION OF THE STATE ARE IN
THE ONE-HALF TO ONE INCH RANGE...PERHAPS LOCALLY HEAVIER. RAINFALL AMOUNTS
HAVE BEEN MUCH LIGHTER IN THE RICHMOND AREA...WITH LESS THAN ONE-TENTH OF
AN INCH AT THE RICHMOND AIRPORT THIS MORNING.

DURING THE PAST 2 HOURS...RADAR HAS SHOWN AN INCREASE IN PRECIPITATION
COVERAGE WEST AND SOUTH OF RICHMOND. RADAR IMAGERY AT 1025 AM SHOWED A
LARGE AREA OF MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN FROM BUCKINGHAM...CUMBERLAND...
AND AMELIA COUNTIES SOUTHWARD TO THE VIRGINIA/NORTH CAROLINA BORDER.

THIS HEAVIER RAINFALL WILL SPREAD EASTWARD ACROSS THE RICHMOND METRO
AREA DURING THE NEXT HOUR OR TWO. RAINFALL AMOUNTS THROUGH TODAY WILL
LIKELY BE IN THE ONE-HALF TO ONE INCH RANGE..LOCALLY HEAVIER...ACROSS
CENTRAL VIRGINIA.

PERSONS TRAVELLING ACROSS CENTRAL VIRGINIA TODAY SHOULD USE EXTRA
CAUTION.  THE COMBINATION OF SIGNIFICANT RAIN PLUS DIRT AND OIL ON
THE ROADS WILL MAKE FOR SLIPPERY CONDITIONS.  SLOW DOWN AND KEEP
PLENTY OF BRAKING ROOM BETWEEN YOUR VEHICLE AND THE ONE IN FRONT OF
YOU.

THE RAIN IS BEING PRODUCED BY LOW PRESSURE MOVING ACROSS NORTHEASTERN
TENNESSEE. THIS LOW WILL INTENSIFY AND TRACK ACROSS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA
TO NEAR THE RICHMOND AREA BY THIS EVENING...THEN MOVE OFF THE VIRGINIA
COAST LATE TONIGHT. THE RAIN ACROSS CENTRAL VIRGINIA WILL TAPER OFF BY
THIS EVENING AS THE LOW MOVES TO THE EAST OF THE RICHMOND AREA.

ADDITIONAL STATEMENTS WILL BE ISSUED AS NEEDED.
