THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ASHEVILLE HAS ISSUED A
FLASH FLOOD WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL  945 AM EST
FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION...
 
IN WEST NORTH CAROLINA
 
   ...CHEROKEE COUNTY
 
AT 745 AM EST...WEATHER SERVICE RADAR INDICATED MOSTLY LIGHT RAIN AND
EMBEDDED HEAVIER SHOWERS OVER THE MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
AND EASTERN TENNESSEE. A COOP OBSERVER REPORTED 2.70 INCHES OF RAIN IN
THE ANDREWS AREA OF CHEROKEE COUNTY SINCE ABOUT 9 PM LAST NIGHT. THE
HIWASSEE RIVER WAS AT BANKFUL AS WELL AS MANY OF THE STREAMS IN THE
COUNTY.
 
NEARLY CONTINUOUS RAIN...POSSIBLY HEAVY AT TIMES...IS EXPECTED IN THIS
AREA FOR THE NEXT COUPLE HOURS. WITH THE GROUND ALREADY SATURATED ANY
ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAIN WILL RUNOFF INTO RIVERS AND STREAMS CAUSING THEM
TO RISE RAPIDLY. FLOODING MAY ALSO OCCUR IN OTHER LOW-LYING AREAS.
 
A FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR IS
IMMINENT.  MOST FLASH FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES.  DO NOT
ATTEMPT TO CROSS BRIDGES...DIPS...OR LOW SPOTS IF WATER COVERS
THE ROADWAY.  NEVER TRY TO hCROSS A FLOWING STREAM...EVEN A SMALL
ONE...ON FOOT.  TO ESCAPE RISING WATER MOVE UP TO HIGHER GROUND.
